Chris Williams Specialist Optometrist

Chris Williams Specialist Optometrist Welcome to Chris Williams Optometrists, a family run, friendly and professional optometry practice in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Chris first came to Llantwit Major to work in 1993. After 6 years in the town he decided to open his own practice in Newton House, a premise located in the heart of the town and first built by another Williams family for their fruit and veg business. The practice rapidly grew and and soon it became necessary to utilise the whole of the ground floor of Newton House. This required significant invest

ment, but the rewards were many: increased reception space, a new dispensing area, a second (wheel chair friendly) consulting room and an on-site lab.

We’ve had a lot of people contacting the practice to see if we are selling solar glasses for viewing the eclipse. The simple answer is no, because there are far too many fakes out there and as none of our regular suppliers are selling them I don’t want to source any from a supplier I don’t know and trust.

This is how I will be viewing the eclipse, using my home made pin hole viewer. A cereal box works really well, I used a box with a lid for demonstration purposes. Foil is used to make the pin hole in because it gives a nice clean hole without feathery edges. Light from the sun passes through the hole and creates an image on the inside at the back of the box (I used my retinoscope as a make shift “sun” to demonstrate) If your box in not white, a piece of white paper taped to the back makes an excellent screen. You then put your left eye to the big hole and watch the image of the eclipse perfectly safely!!

On Wednesday 12th a 90% partial eclipse will be visible over most of South Wales. Please view this safely. Looking directly at the sun causes permanent damage to your retina that never repairs. The last eclipse of this scale in 1999 resulted in 70 people in the UK suffering permanent irreversible damage to their eyes. Please be very careful. This video offers very good advice.

So nice to be able to hang some of the original 1930s stained glass back in the window.

The scare mongering continues. Had a patient in today convinced that because he only has one eye, the “new regulations” mean he is going to lose his licence. The law concerning the legal visual requirement for driving is not changing!!!! See my post from last Autumn linked below for a full explanation.
