The irony of nursing…

Everyone complains about staff shortages.
But the nurse who picks up an extra shift on a ward that isn’t even theirs is often the first to be criticised.

If someone came to help your team, make them feel welcome—not watched.

A simple “Thank you” goes much further than constant policing.

🚨 Never Ignore These Signs After Hitting Your Head.

Not every head injury is “just a bump.”

⚠️ Seek urgent medical attention if, after a head injury, someone has:
1. A severe or worsening headache
2. Repeated vomiting
3. Increasing drowsiness or difficulty waking up
4. Confusion, unusual behavior, or memory loss
5. Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
6. Blurred or double vision
7. Slurred speech
8. A seizure
9. Clear fluid or blood leaking from the nose or ears

These could be signs of a serious brain injury.

When it comes to the brain, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t ignore these warning signs:

😕 F – Face drooping

🚑 T – Time to call emergency services immediately.

A stroke doesn’t wait.
Neither should you.

The faster treatment starts, the greater the chance of saving brain tissue, reducing disability, and improving recovery.

One piece of advice I’d give every younger nurse:

Never be afraid to ask questions.

Patients won’t remember how confident you looked—but they’ll be affected by the decisions you make.

There is no shame in saying, “I’m not sure, can you show me?” The only dangerous mistake is pretending you already know.

Stay curious. Stay humble. Keep learning.

That’s how good nurses become exceptional nurses. 💙👩🏽‍⚕️

Some of the clearest handovers I’ve received have been from male nurses.

Why?

They often keep it:
✔️ Short
✔️ Structured
✔️ Straight to the point
✔️ Focused on what matters for patient safety

No unnecessary stories. Just the information you need.

Of course, I’ve worked with amazing female nurses too. Great handovers depend on the individual—not just gender.

Did you know that?

🚨 STOP SCROLLING! 🚨

❓Did you know that the air you’re breathing right now is only 21% oxygen?

Yes! 😲
Most people are shocked to learn this.

Here’s what happens when oxygen is given through a nasal cannula 👇

🫁 Room Air = 21% Oxygen (FiO₂)

💨 1 L/min of oxygen → 24%
💨 2 L/min of oxygen → 28%
💨 3 L/min of oxygen → 32%
💨 4 L/min of oxygen→ 36%
💨 5 L/min of oxygen→ 40%
💨 6 L/min of oxygen→ 44%

📚 What is FiO₂?

FiO₂ (Fraction of Inspired Oxygen) is the percentage of oxygen a person breathes in.

So if a patient is on 4 L/min via nasal cannula, they’re receiving approximately 36% oxygen—not 100%.

✅ Work of breathing
✅ Level of consciousness
✅ Skin colour
✅ Ability to speak
✅ Overall clinical condition
