We wanted to raise an issue that’s important to us here at Lovegrass.

European and US companies now grow Teff for consumption domestically. In these cases, Ethiopians don’t see any benefits from the growing international popularity of the grain they have farmed for generations. Some Europeans have even tried to patent Teff flour, pushing Ethiopians to pay royalties to produce something that has always been theirs!

Both cases, in our opinion, are Biopiracy: marketing goods from the Global South without sharing profits with the origin country. This is THE reason why Yonas, our founder, set up Lovegrass. He wanted Ethiopians to see some benefit from the growing success of their grain.

How can you help? Make sure the Teff you buy is 100% Habesha. 👼🏾
