I've spent years inside high performance environments, and if there's one thing I know to be true, it's that money remains the last real taboo at work.
We've got better at talking about mental health. Menopause is finally on the agenda in many organisations. Burnout gets airtime now, even if the response is still often individual rather than systemic. But money? People are still terrified to go there.
And I understand why. There's so much shame wrapped up in it, fear of being judged, of looking like you can't cope, of saying something that feels too personal. Managers feel unequipped. HR teams aren't sure where the line is. So the silence continues, and the stress underneath it keeps building.
In my own corporate career, and now in my work with leaders, I've seen that financial stress doesn't stay in a neat box. It sits right at the intersection of the personal and the professional, which is why it's so hard to talk about, and why it matters so much.
If we're serious about psychological safety, we have to acknowledge this. Psychological safety means people can bring what's real, not just the professional, polished version of themselves. And if someone is carrying serious financial worry, that's real. It's affecting how they work, whether we choose to see it or not.
The question for organisations isn't whether this is their business. It already is. The question is whether they're going to do something useful with that, or keep hoping people leave it at the door.
I'm not an Emotional & Behavioural Finance expert, which is why I'm partnering with someone who is. On 6th July, I'm hosting a virtual training session delivered by our partner Kim Uzzell, a financial psychologist and founder of The Financial Wellbeing Academy.
It's our Financial Championยฎ Training for HR, a practical session designed to give you the language and tools to navigate these sensitive conversations safely. Kim is brilliant at making this complex topic clear and actionable, and I'm really glad to be working with her on this.
