A partner can have 9 HR complaints. But still be protected from blame or consequence.

Why?

Because they’re bringing in millions.

Sahar Farooqi, Managing Partner at Arbor Law, argues that too many law firms reward revenue over leadership.

When bad behaviour is tolerated because someone is profitable, the culture suffers.

Leadership isn't just about making money.

It's about protecting your people.

What’s your view…

Should law firms tolerate toxic behaviour if someone brings in millions?

Working hard isn't always enough.

For years, Jasmine Chaudry (now Partner at Waterstone Legal) believed that if she kept doing great work, the opportunities would eventually come.

They didn't.

Your career isn't built on talent alone.

It's built on visibility, relationships, and having the courage to put yourself out there.

Not everyone will connect with your story.

But the right people never will if they don't know you exist.

The lawyers who thrive aren't always the loudest.

They're the ones who take ownership of their careers.

What’s your view?

Law firms don't just have a wellbeing problem.

They have a talent problem.

More lawyers are questioning whether they want to stay in the profession.

Many leave long before reaching partnership.

Patrick McCann says this isn't just bad for lawyers.

It's bad for business.

Replacing talented people is expensive.

Losing future leaders weakens firms.

A sustainable law firm isn't built by burning people out.

It's built by helping them thrive.

What’s your view?

The SQE law school exams need an overhaul.

And we’ve called for it!

We just made the front page of Legal Cheek 📰

Eeeeeek 😅

(Still pinching myself!)

Episode 7 with didn’t hold back.

We called out the SQE. And the SRA’s handling of it.

The comments split straight down the middle. Hate. Love. No in between.

You’ve only made it when you’ve got haters too, right?

Lawyer Unleashed was always built to say what needs to be said. That no one else is saying.

Front page proves it’s landing.

Leaving law wasn't a snap decision for me.

It took years.

People I respected told me I was making the biggest mistake of my life.

They weren't trying to hold me back.

They genuinely believed they were protecting me.

But sometimes the hardest career decisions are also the right ones.

The biggest changes rarely happen overnight.

They happen after months, or even years, of questioning whether the life you've built is still the one you want.

To make the right move, you have to dig deep…and find out what truly lights your fire.

I thought getting into a Magic Circle law firm would change my life.

It almost didn't happen.

After more than 50 rejections, I was exhausted.

Then I stopped trying to be the ‘perfect’ candidate.

And I finally got the job.

I thought I'd made it.

That everything I'd ever worked for was finally within reach.

But from day one, I realised the reality of the profession was nothing like I'd imagined.

I realised the secret truth…

That the system was completely broken.

Behind the titles.

Behind the billable hours.

Behind the success.

Too many lawyers are struggling in silence.

I saw colleagues pushed to breaking point.

Friends working through the night.

People questioning whether they could keep going.

Success should never come at the expense of someone's mental health.

That's why these conversations matter.

Because a profession built on excellence shouldn't accept a culture that breaks its people.

I had the career every lawyer is told to want.

I made it to law firm partner.

I had the title.

The salary.

The success.

But something wasn’t right.

For years, I convinced myself this was just what being a lawyer looked like.

And I had to suck it up.

But I was wrong.

In this episode of 𝘓𝘢𝘸𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥, I talk about:

- the career I left behind,
- the failures that shaped me,
- and why redefining success was the best decision I ever made.

The SRA comes down hard on lawyers who make small mistakes.

But who's holding the regulator accountable?

James Richardson says the SRA ignored repeated warnings about the SQE.

A clear majority of the profession warned them it was a bad idea.

And it turned out to be a bad idea.

And the results speak for themselves.

In July last year 59% of candidates failed SQE1.

Then there was the Axiom Ince collapse.

One person was allowed by the SRA to be CEO, sole shareholder, compliance officer and money laundering officer.

He walked away with over £60 million of client money.

Around 1,400 people lost their jobs.

James says the profession needs to ask a difficult question:

If lawyers are expected to uphold the highest standards, shouldn't regulators be held to the same?

A clear majority of the legal profession said the SQE was a bad idea.

James Richardson says the warnings were impossible to ignore.

But the SRA pushed ahead anyway.

Now the results are speaking for themselves.

Pass rates are falling.

The lowest ever pass rate for SQE1 in July last year was just 41%.

Which means three out of five aspiring solicitors failed.

James calls for an overhaul of a failing system.

(A note on accuracy of the responses to the SRA's original SQE consultation: a clear majority of respondents who took a position (including law firms) were opposed, rising to over 80% among academic respondents specifically.)
