Paying for Your Support and Care at Home.
If you have been assessed for needing care, you will also have been assessed to see how much money you will have to contribute towards your care costs. You may have concerns about the costs of care while still having some money left over to live on.
There are several places where you can turn to for financial help, one of the major places being from Social Services. Age UK has a very good website where you can read up on how to claim for any assistance.
The amount of financial help you receive from Social Services will very much depend on your local authority. In some cases there are minimum requirements that they will assist you with.
After you have been assessed, your care needs will then be reviewed to see whether you are eligible for assistance. For this to be approved there are national eligibility criteria that you need to meet.
Once you have met these criteria a local authority then has a duty of care to meet your needs, although they can and often will charge for their services.
Once the council has assessed you to see how much care and support you need, you will then need to go through a ‘means test’ to see how much you will be required to contribute. This amount will vary depending on your circumstances, and make be very little. You will also be informed how much the council will assist you with payments.
There are any different types of assistance that you can receive help with. Some will be provided for free, while others will ask that you contribute.
Some services which you may request:
Home or domiciliary care
Meals delivered to your home
Day centre and respite care
Live-in care services
Rehabilitation services
Counselling
Disability equipment
Adaptions to your home
Any decisions which are made by the council and Social Services will be passed on to you in writing so that you can make an educated decision about your care costs, and how much you will be asked to contribute. You can appeal this decision at any time, particularly if your own circumstances change and your assets decrease.
