📊 Is a lower pain score the only sign that something is changing?

Pain matters and should always be taken seriously—but a single number cannot describe your entire experience.

When reviewing a musculoskeletal concern or rehabilitation plan, it may also be useful to consider:

How often symptoms occur
Are they constant, occasional or linked to particular activities?

How long symptoms last
Do they settle quickly, remain for hours or affect the following day?

What you can do
Can you sit, walk, work, exercise or complete an everyday task differently?

Your confidence with movement
Do certain activities feel more manageable—or are you increasingly avoiding them?

Your individual goals
Progress should relate to what matters to you, whether that is completing a workday, gardening, walking farther or returning gradually to an activity.

These measures do not always change together. Function may begin to change before pain does, symptoms may fluctuate, and one more difficult day does not automatically tell us that tissue damage has occurred or that all progress has been lost.

Equally, progress should never be assumed. New, severe or worsening symptoms—and any significant change in health—may require reassessment or referral.

At ACW, review is about comparing the current picture with the starting point, discussing what matters to the individual and deciding whether the plan should continue, change or stop.

A pain score is one useful piece of information—not the whole report.

Save this post as a reminder to measure what matters.

📸 A posture photograph can show how you were standing at one particular moment. It cannot tell your entire clinical story.

Digital posture analysis may help document observable positions and identify findings that deserve further consideration. However, it cannot by itself:

* Explain why somebody has pain
* Identify one certain “root cause”
* Determine whether treatment is required
* Measure the health of the nervous system
* Predict how somebody will respond to care

Posture naturally varies with the task, comfort, fatigue, instructions and other individual factors. Small asymmetries are also common and are not automatically evidence of damage or dysfunction.

At ACW, posture findings are considered alongside:

✅ Your symptoms and health history
✅ How the concern affects everyday activities
✅ Movement and functional assessment
✅ Relevant orthopaedic or neurological checks
✅ Your needs, preferences and goals

A posture image can add information—but it should never replace a relevant clinical assessment.

Save this explanation if you have ever wondered what posture-analysis lines and measurements actually mean.

This is general information and does not interpret an individual posture image or provide a diagnosis.

👟 A step isn’t the only way to take part in STEPtember.

STEPtember is a September movement and fundraising campaign supporting cerebral palsy research and disability innovation.

The current campaign sets a headline challenge of 10,000 step-equivalents a day—but recognises more than 80 activities. These include dancing, hiking, rehabilitation activities and moving in a wheelchair.

That distinction matters.

10,000 steps is a campaign target—not a universal health prescription. An appropriate amount and form of movement will differ according to someone’s health, mobility, circumstances and preferences.

Taking part might mean:

💙 Walking or wheeling
💙 Dancing or swimming
💙 Completing an adapted activity
💙 Supporting somebody else’s challenge
💙 Fundraising without setting a physical target

Movement should be inclusive and adaptive. Mobility aids count, adaptations count—and choosing not to pursue a high activity target is valid too.

How could we make everyday movement opportunities more accessible in Hendon and Barnet?

📈 Has a familiar pain suddenly felt worse again?

When symptoms flare, it can feel as though every bit of progress has disappeared. For people managing persistent or recurring musculoskeletal pain, however, progress is rarely a perfectly straight line.

A temporary increase in familiar symptoms deserves attention, but it does not automatically prove that:

* New tissue damage has occurred
* Your rehabilitation has failed
* You have returned to your original starting point
* Everything in your plan needs to stop

Activity levels, changes in routine, sleep, stress, illness and other circumstances may all influence how symptoms are experienced. Sometimes there is no obvious explanation.

If familiar symptoms flare:

1. Notice what has changed
Consider recent activities, routines and general health without blaming yourself.

2. Refer to your agreed plan
Use the pacing, movement or self-management strategies previously discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

3. Adjust rather than guess
Temporarily modifying an activity may be appropriate. Do not substantially increase exercises, medication or treatment frequency without suitable advice.

4. Review when necessary
Seek individual advice if symptoms are different from usual, severe, worsening, associated with an injury or not settling as expected.

A flare-up is information—not a verdict on your progress.

This post concerns flare-ups of familiar symptoms and is not a diagnosis. New or concerning symptoms require appropriate medical assessment.
