Strong, reliable fixation of a bunion correction is key to the long-term success of bunion surgery. Often, patients have concerns about having something foreign inside the body and there are several myths around this...

1) The screws will restrict movement
No - The screws do not go near the joint, they just hold the bunion correction.

2) I will feel the screws
No - They are within the bone.

3) The screws can be rejected by the body
No - The screws are titanium alloy which, in the vast majority of cases, are inert to the human body - in fact bone grows around the screw, rather than rejecting it.

4) The screws will need to be removed
No - They can be safely left in forever.

Screws give the advantage of a reliable means of maintaining an excellent bunion correction, without the need for prolonged bandaging. They also facilitate immediate weight-bearing and prevent long-term recurrence of the bunion.

Calcium, phosphate and magnesium are minerals important in bone health, as well as being essential to many of the body's normal processes.

Vitamin D increases the absorption of these minerals in the gut. Without adequate absorption from food, the body may turn to your internal stores to ensure you have enough for the essential processes it needs. Your bones are a great source of calcium, so a lack of Vitamin D may cause your body to source calcium from your bones. This can weaken them and increases the risk of bone stress fractures as many studies have proven. If blood levels of the circulating form of Vitamin D are less than 40 ng/mL, an increase risk of stress fractures in the foot and ankle occur.

So, Vitamin D does not directly make your bones stronger, but plays an important part in the bone health process.

In addition to getting plenty of sunlight, enjoy the following foods with sources of Vitamin D:

Cod liver oil, oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), egg yolk, meat, offal, milk, mushrooms. Fortified foods (such as fat spreads and some breakfast cereals and yoghurts) contain small amounts.

It's a b....union 🙈

Despite plenty of web pages purporting that one cause of bunions is pregnancy, there is no scientific evidence to support this.

There are many plausible explanations as to why pregnancy can increase the width of the foot causing a bunion but these have not been substantiated, scientifically speaking. As is often the case on the internet, disinformation is rife. It takes time and expertise to analyse the science to produce accurate information and make a source trusted.

So, can women develop a bunion during pregnancy? Of course! But that doesn't mean the bunion was caused by pregnancy.

I have never had a patient tell me the bunion started around pregnancy and although this is personal anecdote, I have experience in treating over 1,500 bunions.

Some existing foot problems can become worse during pregnancy and the feet shape do change in pregnancy. There may be two reasons for this; weight gain and hormones.

Weight gain from pregnancy can lead to increased pressure and overloading on the front of your feet. If you have a bunion - this may become more noticeable.

The hormone relaxin plays a role in breaking down collagen, allowing for ligaments to relax and bones in the pelvis to spread creating room for the growing baby. Relaxin is thought to affect foot ligaments too. This can lead to a persistent loss of arch height and rigidity, as well as greater arch drop and foot lengthening (Segal et al 2013).

However, despite these changes, it has not been proven that pregnancy causes a bunion!

The beauty of keyhole bunion surgery is the power of correction achievable.

The bunion can be moved 100% away from the metatarsal (long bone that connects to the big toe) as seen on the second carousel image, unachievable with traditional open bunion surgery.

This achieves normal foot alignment, and allows for even severe bunions to be corrected successfully with low recurrence rates.
