Hormones influence almost every part of your body, yet most of us are never taught what they actually do.

Understanding hormones won't explain every symptom or replace medical advice, but it can give you a clearer framework for understanding what's happening in your body and help you ask more informed questions.

This carousel is part of a series where I'll be breaking down the science behind hormones, perimenopause and menopause into clear, practical, evidence-based explanations.

I hope you find it helpful.

What does oestrogen actually do?

Many people think of oestrogen as simply a reproductive hormone.

In reality, the main form before menopause, oestradiol (E2), helps support the function of many organs and tissues throughout the body.

That's one reason why changes in oestradiol levels can affect much more than the menstrual cycle.

Understanding where oestradiol acts in the body helps explain why changes in hormone levels can contribute to symptoms such as brain fog, mood changes, bladder symptoms and changes in bone health.

In this carousel, I explain:

🧠 What oestrogen actually is

🌿 Why oestradiol is so important

🔬 How it works through receptors throughout the body

❤️ Some of the key functions it helps support

Understanding the science behind our hormones can help us make sense of the changes our bodies experience and support more informed conversations about our health.

My aim is to make the science behind women's health clear, accessible and empowering through evidence-based education.

One of the most frustrating things about perimenopause is how unpredictable symptoms can feel.

You may have periods when symptoms improve, only for them to return, or for different symptoms to emerge.

Hormonal fluctuations may be part of the explanation. But they aren't the whole story.

Symptoms and experiences vary considerably between women, and factors such as health, sleep, stress and individual biology may also influence what we experience.

This is one reason I'm cautious of anyone claiming there's one universal solution to perimenopause.

Understanding your own patterns won't give you all the answers. But it may help you ask better questions, have more informed conversations about your health and recognise when something deserves further investigation.

Have your symptoms followed any kind of pattern, or have they seemed completely unpredictable?

Let’s think this through together. 🌿

MYTH: Menopause is just hot flushes ❌

Hot flushes are common, but they're only one possible symptom.

Menopause can affect many areas of health including:

• Brain function and concentration
• Mood and emotional wellbeing
• Sleep quality
• Joints, bladder and vaginal health
• Menstrual changes during perimenopause

There are more than 30 recognised symptoms, and everyone's experience is different.

🌿 Welcome to Pillars of Her Health 🌿

Hello!

After more than 20 years working in scientific research, I've become increasingly passionate about helping women understand the science behind perimenopause, menopause and women's health.

Like many women, I've seen how confusing and overwhelming the information can be. Conflicting advice, endless opinions and unanswered questions can leave us feeling uncertain about what is happening in our bodies and what to do next.

I created Pillars of Her Health to provide clear, evidence-based information that helps women make informed decisions with confidence.

My aim is to translate complex science into practical, understandable guidance that supports women's health and wellbeing.

Over the coming weeks and months I'll be sharing:

✨ Perimenopause and menopause education
✨ Evidence-based health information
✨ Practical lifestyle insights
✨ Resources and tools
✨ New guides and videos

Thank you for being here at the very beginning of this journey.
