On 10th September, its WORLD SU***DE PREVENTION DAY. Every life is precious, and with a bit more information, you might be able to help save someone’s life

💬 Start the Conversation
Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is listen.

Here are some tips:

You don’t need all the answers. Just being there can make a huge difference.

Never promise to keep suicidal thoughts a secret. It’s super important to speak up to keep someone safe.

Looking after yourself is vital, especially after supporting someone through a crisis.

🗣️ Ask the Question
Always ask if you think someone is thinking about su***de. It shows you care and can make a big difference.

Keep checking in, even if they seem better.

🚨 What to Do in a Crisis
Dial 999
Call NHS 111
Call Samaritans at 116 123
Text ‘SHOUT’ to 85258

🛠️ Su***de Prevention Toolkit
Check out the MHFAider Su***de Prevention Toolkit on the MHFAider Support App. It includes sections on su***de awareness, workplace prevention, and a safety plan.

Put up a Su***de Support Posterhttps://www.wellbeingfirstaid.co.uk/_files/ugd/09b1ae_ffd24dcc7b794800a5f9af20c080818b.pdf in your office to mark the day and help to start the conversation

New term. New timetable. New pile of things to remember.

Before the diary fills up again, I wanted to share something that might help.

Every September feels like a bit of a fresh start. New faces, new routines, and hopefully a little more energy in the tank after the summer.

It's also a good moment to pause before things get busy, and have a think about what you want wellbeing to look like at your school this year. Not in a big, formal way. More like the conversation you'd have over a cuppa with a colleague about what's actually working well, and where people might want a bit more confidence.

I've put together a free, 5-minute Whole School Wellbeing Check-in to help with exactly that. It's a look at three areas:

- support for pupils

- confidence and support for staff

- how wellbeing is understood and embedded across the whole school

It works well brought into an INSET day, a staff meeting, or just sat with over a coffee before the pupils are back.

New term, new start. A good moment to reset, together, and begin the year with a bit more clarity about what wellbeing looks like at your school.

I'd love to hear from you. What's one thing your school does that helps young people feel seen, heard and supported?

Results day is about so much more than results. I’m always asking young people about what’s stressing them out, and these are the things that come up time and time again (no matter what time of year it is);

“Exam results”
“Results day”
“Exams. My future”
“My future”

For parents and carers today, the results might be thing in front of you but underneath it is likely fear, hope, uncertainty and a bit of “what do I do now?”

Sometimes the most helpful reaction we can have is no reaction. Pause and listen first. Stay calm. And focus on connection. Let them feel what they’re feeling and be alongside side them in it, without jumping to solve it or fix it.

“I’m here with you, we’ll work this out together” 💚

We're well into the Summer holidays now, and I was surprised this week when I looked at my TES profile download stats.

My latest free school resource has got more downloads than my other resources combined.

At the end of one of my mental health awareness sessions last term, I asked the kids to write down one commitment they wanted to make to support their mental health.

One of them wrote:
"Not going to school."

It made me laugh 😂 Such a teenager answer.

But the more I think about it, the more it makes me think, what might school really be like for a young person if not going to school seems like the best thing they could do for their mental health?

So I wrote a blog about it and created a free resource for schools off the back of it. A free 5-minute Whole School Wellbeing Check-in for school leaders or teaching staff.

It's a quick conversation starter to help you recognise what’s already working in terms of wellbeing at your school and consider what your school might like to build on next.

You can complete it on your own, use it to start a conversation with colleagues or bring it into a leadership meeting.
