Volunteers' Week is a timely reminder that expertise can create value far beyond the test room.

We recently spoke to four optical professionals, Rebecca, Benji, Karen, and Bansri, about how they choose to give back and what they have gained from their volunteering experiences.

From supporting eye care initiatives overseas with Vision Care to helping people experiencing homelessness through Streets Kitchen, their stories highlight the many ways eye care professionals can use their skills, time and experience to make a difference.

Before each edition comes to life and lands on your doorstep, the OT team comes together to plan, discuss and share ideas for the upcoming issue.

In our next edition, landing this weekend, we explore the realities of running an optometry business on the High Street in 2026.

After closing the edition and getting it ready for print, our editor, Emily McCormick, shares her reflections on the upcoming Practice Resilience edition.

"Every thriving practice has a story of perseverance behind it. In this edition, we shine a light on the people, decisions and innovations helping High Street optometry thrive. When interviewing the practitioners who feature in this issue, we were reminded of the resilience and dedication required of practice owners as they navigate challenges and seize opportunities in an ever-changing landscape."

What does practice resilience look like in your business? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

What do you wish someone had told you at the start of your career?

Zak Saleem, pre-reg optometrist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, shares three lessons from his pre-reg year that have shaped his experience so far:

→ Time management matters just as much as clinical knowledge
→ Progress comes through learning, not perfection
→ Everyone builds skills and confidence at their own pace

If you know someone navigating their pre-reg year, share this with them.
