🌍 SRHM is at the World Health Assembly this week in Geneva, where global health leaders, policymakers, researchers, and advocates are coming together to shape the future of health priorities worldwide. The World Health Assembly serves as WHO’s decision-making forum and brings together Member States and partners to address some of the world’s most urgent health challenges.

🎙️ Throughout the week of 18–23 May 2026, SRHM will be sharing a series of short interviews featuring diverse voices from across the global health community, highlighting different perspectives, emerging ideas, and conversations shaping health and rights on the global stage.

In this first interview, Eszter Kismodi talks to Shirin Heidari, following the event 'Advancing Gender-Responsive Science for Global Health Equity: A Decade of the SAGER Guidelines'. The conversation reflected on the transformative impact of the SAGER (S*x and Gender Equity in Research) Guidelines over the past ten years and the urgent need to strengthen gender-responsive science in an increasingly contested global environment.

SRHM was the first journal to implement the guidelines under Shirin Heidari’s leadership as Editor-in-Chief, helping to set an important precedent for gender responsive, rights-based, scientifically rigorous publishing.

👉 Reproductive coercion and abuse involves pressure, threats, or force to control someone’s choices about contraception, pregnancy, or abortion. It is a complex and evolving form of gender-based violence, and how we measure it matters.

🌏 This Delphi study brings together global experts to develop a more comprehensive, up-to-date way to capture these experiences in research and surveys worldwide.

Key insights:

• 30 experts from 15 countries contributed, spanning five global regions
• 74 potential survey items were reviewed, with 59 selected for further testing
• New items reflect a broader, more current understanding of coercive behaviours
• Experts emphasised the importance of capturing the relationship context where abuse occurs
• Ongoing challenges include how to measure intent and design response options

👉 By improving how reproductive coercion and abuse is measured, this work helps build a stronger evidence base to inform policy, services, and interventions that protect reproductive autonomy globally.
