NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre

NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre Based at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, we are dedicated to vision research.

Our aim is to benefit patients by substantially improving the diagnosis, management and treatment of eye conditions. Our Biomedical Research Centre is dedicated to vision research. After two consecutive five-year terms starting back in 2007, we successfully received a new NIHR award in 2017 for another five years to support and further develop our research strategy. We continue to prioritise areas

where there is unmet patient need and where we have an outstanding track record of translational achievement and expertise at an international level. Around our research, we have built infrastructure, we are growing strategic partnerships and collaborations and building capacity to support and consolidate all the links of the translational bridge. As a result, new treatment techniques and practices that improve patient health are being brought through to clinical and surgical practice as quickly as possible, thereby benefiting patients, as well as the NHS, universities and the UK as a whole.

This , we were joined by Prof Alice Davidson’s inherited corneal disease Lab, showcasing their cutting-edge genetics research. We got hands-on experience extracting DNA from strawberries.

Thank you to everyone involved in helping us transform the lives of patients facing sight loss through research.

Another successful ‘Ophthalmology Academic Trainees Forum’, giving the inside story behind the paper and the podium moment.

We heard from Prof. Gus Gazzard, a glaucoma specialist who led the LiGHT Trial, a landmark study on laser therapy for glaucoma that pioneered minimally invasive surgery techniques. Dr. Shruti Chandra spoke candidly about life as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and an ST4 Ophthalmology Registrar.

Congratulations to this year’s NIHR Moorfields BRC Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement awardees.

Winner: Associate Prof. Amanda-Jayne Carr
We are celebrating Amanda’s commitment to making complex research accessible, engaging, and relevant to patients and the wider public. She inspires her lab to value PPIE as an integral part of research rather than an afterthought. Pulling the public in with fun tasks like genetic taste tests and games!

Runner-up: Dr. Jacqueline Miller’s
Jacq has co-produced child-centred research methods. In partnership with eyeYPAG, the NIHR Moorfields BRC-funded Young Person's Advisory Group for Eye and Vision Research, she has developed tools that help give young people equitable access and representation.

Transcript / Description:
The video shows a series of scenes featuring a diverse group of people taking part in health research activities. A voice-over narration says:
“We all rely on health research to help us live well, but research hasn't always included everyone. If only a few of us take part in research, the results can't work for everyone. Your voice in research means better health care for all. Get involved.” At the end of the video, there is information on how to take part in research; the link is in this post.
