Are you up to date with the latest changes affecting nannies?
There are several changes to the Student Finance Childcare Grant. If your employer is paying you through this scheme or you want to make sure you are able to accept employment from someone using this scheme, from August 2026, you will need to become a Registered Childminder.
Riverside Training Company can support you in making this transition
How to Become a Childminder
If you’re thinking about becoming a childminder, there are a few steps you’ll need to complete before you can register with Ofsted. Here’s a simple guide to help you through the process.
Step 1 - Apply for an enhanced DBS check
You will need an enhanced DBS check before you can register with Ofsted.
When applying, make sure the position is listed as Childminder
Anyone aged 16 or over who lives in your home must also have an enhanced DBS check.
Everyone who requires a DBS check should also join the DBS Update Service.
Step 2 - Complete a Health Declaration
As part of your application, you’ll need to complete a Health Declaration
Download and print the form
Take it to your GP practice for completion
You do not usually need to see the GP in person
Step 3 - Complete your training
Paediatric First Aid
A 12-hour paediatric first aid qualification is a requirement for registration and must be renewed every three years.
Riverside Training Company offers this course here:

Childcare Training
If you will be caring for children under five (Early Years Register)
Ofsted does not require a specific childcare course. However, you must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), as this forms part of the Ofsted inspection.
We offer two excellent training options.
Option 1 - Childminding: Understanding the Early Years Foundation Stage
https://www.riversidetrainingcompany.co.uk/product/childminding-training-understanding-the-early-years-foundation-stage/
This course explains:
The requirements to become a registered childminder
The EYFS Framework
What Ofsted expects during an inspection
You’ll receive a certificate of completion.
Option 2 - NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Homebase Childcare

This is a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification that provides a comprehensive understanding of working as a home-based childcarer. Successful learners receive an accredited qualification that is recognised across the childcare sector.
If you will only care for children aged over 5
If you are applying only to the Childcare Register, we recommend completing Common Core Skills training.
Step 4: Applying to Ofsted
Once your DBS check has been completed, you can submit your application to Ofsted.
Choose the register that matches the ages of the children you intend to care for:
Early years register: children from birth until 31st of August following their fifth birthday
Childcare register: children from age 5 up to their eighth birthday
Both registers: if you plan to care for children from birth to 8 years
Step 5 - Get ready for your Ofsted visit
As part of the registration process, an Ofsted inspector will visit your home.
They will check that you can provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment where children can learn, play and thrive. They will also look at how you meet the statutory requirements, safeguard children and support their learning and development.
