The condition widely known as PCOS (polycystic o***y syndrome) is increasingly being referred to as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, reflecting a clearer and more accurate understanding of its complexity.
This updated terminology recognises that PCOS is not just an ovarian condition. It can involve multiple hormone systems, metabolism, reproductive health, as well as mental and skin‑related effects. By better reflecting the full picture, the new name aims to support earlier recognition, improved diagnostic accuracy and more holistic care.
The terminology has been informed by a large international process involving both patients and healthcare professionals, with the aim of improving clarity, reducing stigma and supporting better long‑term outcomes. A phased transition to the new term is expected over the coming years across clinical care, research and education.
As understanding of PCOS continues to evolve, this shift in language represents an important step towards improving awareness, patient experience and the quality of care.
