Resting Reef

Resting Reef An award-winning death-care service that turns the ashes of those who have died, into beautiful memorial reefs.

Resting Reef is a death care startup that redefines how we honour loved ones through an environmentally conscious memorial service. Founded by graduates from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, Aura Murillo and Louise Skajem, the sustainable venture transforms cremated ashes into living ocean reefs that regenerate marine ecosystems. By turning loss into life, Resting Reef aims to

tackle several issues at once: redefine traditions with an ocean “cemetery” that restores marine biodiversity, sequesters carbon and prevents coastal erosion—creating a lasting tribute that benefits our oceans and future generations. The team at Resting Reef has garnered significant recognition, including winning five Innovate UK grants, the Arts Foundation Fellowship Award, a D&AD Pencil for Creative Excellence and the Seoul Design Award. Resting Reef has been featured in Fast Company, Wallpaper, The Telegraph, and showcased at events like the London Design Biennale and Dutch Design Week.

It’s simpler than you might think.🥰

A Resting Reef transforms cremated human or pet ashes into a lasting memorial reef, placed on the seabed in Bali to help restore marine life.

We guide you through every step: from receiving the ashes and transforming them into a reef structure, to placement, monitoring and long-term regeneration.

And the journey doesn’t end when the reef reaches the ocean.🐠🪸

Over time, your memorial becomes a stable foundation for new marine life, creating a living memorial that can flourish for generations.

Grief is not one feeling. It can be everything at once.

In the space of an hour, we can feel sadness, anger, love, relief, guilt, gratitude, confusion, even moments of laughter. One emotion doesn’t cancel out another. Grief is complex, constantly changing, and very personal.

Part 2 of our series exploring grief and end-of-life conversations 🤎

Tulamben postcards 🌊 the place in Bali where the local community and Resting Reef creates memorial reefs.

From the people who call it home to the marine life growing around each memorial reef. Where memories become part of something that lives on. 🪸

What if saying goodbye could also give something back? 💙🌊

This September 2026, we’re bringing together a small group to Bali for an experience unlike any other hosted locally by Yayasan Karang Kenangan Bali.

Together, we’ll memorialise loved ones by creating living memorial reefs that help restore marine life. You’ll experience the impact firsthand, snorkel or scuba dive at the site, learn about the science behind our work, and see how restoration creates new life.

Our monitoring has shown that our memorial reefs support 17× higher biodiversity than nearby degraded areas, with 102 fish species already recorded around our sites.

A celebration of life, a chance to connect with nature, and an opportunity to leave a legacy in the memory of a loved one that continues growing for generations.
