Evidence-based care for hypermobility & pain

07/10/2026

This is the reality of living with these complex conditions. It’s unpredictable, it’s sometimes debilitating and it’s real.

This is me a few weeks ago in the midst of an autonomic and fatigue flare up.

So yes you may see people exercising, socialising, going on vacation but this is also a side of life that you may not see. And it doesn’t mean we’re faking it or attention seeking.

I am sharing this to help raise awareness this Dysautonomia Awareness Month. I hope it helps to dispel some myths and lack of information about the reality of living with these conditions.

The October Slide: does your body know it’s October before the calendar does? 🍂

So many of you with hEDS and HSD tell me fall is when the pain, fatigue, and stiffness creep back in. Headaches & brainfog too.

So we asked The Zebra Club The Zebra Club Platform - Movement, Education & Community community what the October Slide is like for them and what’s helped.

Weather comes up a lot, especially for migraines. One headache specialist estimates 30 to 50% of people with migraine say weather sets theirs off. It’s rarely the only thing going on, though.

And not everyone slides. Some members actually feel better once it cools down!

If fall is hard for you, try planning for it this year. Go shorter and gentler with movement, rest before you hit empty, and go easy on yourself.

If the push-on-good-days, pay-for-it-later cycle sounds familiar, that’s exactly what our new Overload & Recovery Pathway inside The Zebra Club is for.

Comment SLIDE and we’ll send you the full blog 🍂
And send this to someone who slides every fall 💛

Why I went against traditional advice for hypermobility to help people get more control, stability, body awareness and ultimately strength.

Having someone understand your body, your goals and aspirations can make all the difference when you live with hEDS & HSD.

That’s one of the reasons I created our personalised programmes. I wanted The Zebra Club Platform - Movement, Education & Community members to have the opportunity to share their individual needs, goals and challenges, so I could carefully assess their situation and design a programme specifically for them, as I would for a 1:1 client.

This lovely message captures why that matters: “It’s been done with such care and thought… I’m looking forward to my restart!”

Feeling understood can make all the difference when you’re finding your way back to movement, looking to start movement or progress safely without flaring up.

Registration reopens in November if you’d like to experience your very own, unique to your body needs.

Pain Awareness Month comes to a close. We’re asking does every exercise seem to flare your pain? With hypermobility, hEDS or HSD, it may be nociplastic pain.

Nociplastic pain comes from changes in the nervous system. It can feel far bigger than any injury, or show up when there’s no new injury at all.

Central sensitization is the process thought to drive it, which is why it needs a different approach than other types of chronic pain.

I asked Dr. Leslie Russek, physical therapist, researcher and scientific advisor to The Zebra Club The Zebra Club Platform - Movement, Education & Community how she explains nociplastic pain and how to calm a sensitized nervous system so movement can feel safe again.

Everything’s in the blog, including the 4 clinical criteria and what the research says about hypermobility.

See the blog in the link below in comments.

Save this for your next appointment, and send it to someone with hEDS or HSD whose pain has never quite added up.

Do you stand like this? I did. And I was told I had bad posture of course.

But does being told you have ‘bad’ posture help? What do we do with that information if our systems have no idea what that actually means.

Let me know your thoughts on posture. Has anyone tried to ‘fix’ your anterior pelvic tilt to solve your posture 😞.

Thank you to everyone who has purchased my new book by Handspring Publishing & everyone who has supported the book including Professor Lara Bloom, PolestarPilatesUK, HMSA, and The Ehlers-Danlos Society Alan Hakim & Leslie Russek for their contributing chapters.

I’ve just found out it’s now a bestseller 🥳. I wrote it in the hope that people living with hypermobility, hEDS & HSD would feel more understood, supported and confident in their bodies. This means more than I can say.

Thank you 🙏🏻💜. Here’s to continuing to spread and share knowledge to make patients lives and conditions easier to navigate & manage.

hEDS and HSD pain can come from several places at once. Among them: fascia, muscles, and the nervous system, and new research is starting to make sense of how they connect.

The Integral Movement Method works with all three, in the right order, and it’s the method taught inside The Zebra Club The Zebra Club Platform - Movement, Education & Community

We break it all down in the blog - Comments has the link.

Save this to come back to when you need the research to explain what’s happening.

The moment when Dr Deepak Ravindran asks you to help clinicians understand the common myths & misconceptions in hEDS & HSD, and I laugh 🤭.

I mean, where do we start. This could have taken up a whole hour in itself.

Here’s what I said in the moment:
- it’s not just about the joints
- it’s not just about being bendy
- it’s a system wide condition
- just because someone looks well, doesn’t mean they are
- don’t assume how someone looks is going to give you the answers

I’ve got a whole series on this on my Hypermobility YouTube channel, but let’s share any other myths you’d like to share with clinicians here below ⬇️.
