Persistent cough? It may not be coming from your lungs.
Many ongoing coughs are linked to the upper airway, including the nose, throat and voice box. Conditions such as allergies, post-nasal drip and sinus issues can increase sensitivity in these areas, leading to frequent coughing and throat clearing.

What many people don’t realise is that the way they breathe may also be contributing. Habitual mouth breathing can expose the throat to cooler, drier air, increasing irritation and potentially making symptoms worse.

If you’ve been struggling with a persistent cough, frequent throat clearing, throat tightness or unexplained breathlessness, it may be worth looking beyond the lungs and considering how your breathing pattern is affecting your symptoms.

At Air Physiotherapy, we assess breathing patterns, upper airway function and respiratory mechanics to help identify potential drivers of chronic cough and support more effective symptom management.

Did you know that syncing your breathing with your running stride can help improve efficiency and reduce the effort of breathing while you run?

A technique known as locomotive respiratory coupling involves matching your breath to your heel strike, helping your diaphragm work more effectively and potentially improving movement economy.

At Air Physiotherapy, we help people understand and optimise their breathing - whether you’re managing a respiratory condition, returning to exercise, or looking to improve performance.

How do you manage your breathing when you run? Let us know below.

Your posture can have a bigger impact on your breathing than you might think.
When we sit hunched over desks, laptops or phones, the rib cage has less room to expand and the diaphragm may not move as efficiently. Over time, this can lead to more upper-chest breathing, tension and breathlessness during everyday activity.

Small changes like improving your workstation setup, moving regularly, stretching your chest and neck, and practising relaxed breathing can help support better breathing mechanics.

If your breathing feels tight, shallow or harder than usual, Air Physiotherapy can help.

Your breathing mechanics matter more than most runners realise.

The diaphragm attaches to the lower ribs and thoracic spine, meaning stiffness through the rib cage and upper back can directly affect how well you breathe during training and recovery. Improving thoracic mobility can help create better movement, better breathing patterns and more efficient running mechanics.

Simple drills like cat-cows, thoracic openers and rib cage mobility work can make a real difference over time.

What’s your go-to thoracic mobility drill?
