Persistent cough? It may not be coming from your lungs.
Many ongoing coughs are linked to the upper airway, including the nose, throat and voice box. Conditions such as allergies, post-nasal drip and sinus issues can increase sensitivity in these areas, leading to frequent coughing and throat clearing.
What many people don’t realise is that the way they breathe may also be contributing. Habitual mouth breathing can expose the throat to cooler, drier air, increasing irritation and potentially making symptoms worse.
If you’ve been struggling with a persistent cough, frequent throat clearing, throat tightness or unexplained breathlessness, it may be worth looking beyond the lungs and considering how your breathing pattern is affecting your symptoms.
At Air Physiotherapy, we assess breathing patterns, upper airway function and respiratory mechanics to help identify potential drivers of chronic cough and support more effective symptom management.
