From karate to squash to hiking, Allan had done it all and lived with such an active lifestyle. Unfortunately, he suffered a motorbike accident that damaged his right knee which affected his walking to the point where he was unable to walk more than 50 yards.

Allan decided to go the Spire Healthcare, where he underwent a knee replacement using the Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery. 🏥

Spire St Anthony's Hospital have successfully completed their first robotic-assisted surgery, a partial knee replacement performed using the Mako 4 robotic system.

This achievement marks an exciting step forward for orthopaedic care and positions Spire St Anthony’s Hospital as the first private hospital in London to introduce this pioneering technology. The Mako 4 system enables highly personalised surgical planning and enhanced precision, helping surgeons tailor the procedure to each patient’s unique anatomy.

Following a recent BBC Midlands feature on innovative treatments for thumb-base arthritis, Mr Nick Johnson, Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Spire Nottingham Hospital, was invited to discuss the latest advances in care, including thumb joint replacement surgery. 🏥

The feature highlighted the story of a hairdresser whose career was saved by thumb joint replacement surgery, enabling her to return to the job she loves. Mr Johnson was involved in the trial that helped evaluate this innovative treatment and is continuing to advance understanding of the best options for patients with thumb-base arthritis.

As co-chief investigator of SCOOTT (Surgery versus Conservative OsteoArthritis of Thumb Trial), Mr Johnson is helping to shape the future of thumb arthritis treatment.

Mr Johnson shared: 💬"We see a lot of patients with the problem of thumb-based arthritis, but we don't know what the best treatment is. SCOOTT compares three treatment options and helps us understand which approaches deliver the best outcomes for patients."

Unveiled this week by the Mayor of Harpenden, Councillor Kirsti Wenn, the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system will enable Spire Harpenden Hospital to perform complex operations through smaller incisions, with precision, flexibility and control. 🎯

Patients will benefit from reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times. The first procedure, a prostatectomy, took place at the hospital last week, led by Consultant Urologist Mr James Michael Adshead.🏥

Mr James Michael Adshead, Consultant Urologist and Robotic Lead, Spire Harpenden Hospital, commented:

💬“As a surgeon who has been using robotic-assisted technology since 2008, and more recently using the da Vinci Xi robot, I know just how brilliant the technology is and the advantages it can offer to patients, so I am delighted to be launching this service at Spire Harpenden Hospital. Patient hails new hip replacement technique which helped her get back on her feet just one week after surgery. 🙌

After living with debilitating hip pain for more than three years, North Wales resident Mrs Davies turned to Mr Muthu Ganapathi at Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral for a Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) hip replacement. This innovative muscle-sparing technique can help reduce post-operative pain and support a faster recovery. Just one week after surgery, Mrs Davies was walking unaided and already experiencing life-changing results. 💙

Reflecting on her experience, Mrs Davies said 💬 "After living with discomfort for so long, waking up pain-free felt nothing short of a miracle. It's given me my life back. I can finally start looking forward to getting back outdoors and enjoying the walks I love again."

The procedure was one of the first direct anterior approach (DAA) hip replacements performed at Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral since the service launched in June 2026.

👨‍⚕️Led by consultant orthopaedic surgeons Mr Muthu Ganapathi and Mr Koldo Azurza, the introduction of this technique represents an important step forward in expanding innovative surgical options for patients. It also improves access to an advanced hip replacement approach that remains relatively uncommon in the UK for private patients across the region.
