The Shala

The Shala Yoga Teacher Training | Retreat Days | Livestreamed and In Studio The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres.

In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily

classes encompassing a range styles including ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Mysore self practice, yin and restorative and Jivamukti yoga. The centre is just minutes from West Norwood overground station and is easily accessible from South London's surrounding neighbourhoods including Clapham, Balham, Brixton, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill and Croydon. There are direct train links from Victoria and London Bridge, various buses and cycle racks and free parking nearby. The space is a sanctuary, peaceful, but vibrant and always warm and welcoming. A dedicated yoga space in which to enhance and develop physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A place to roll out your mat, be part of a community, share, heal and grow. Our teachers all share a deep love and respect for yoga and have a passion for sharing their knowledge and for training a new generation of teachers. Shala classes place an emphasis on encouraging students to develop an individual practice. Our ethos will always be centred around forming a close personal touch on all that we do. Being independent, sharing the love of the practices, and having a positive connection with like-minded people. The centre is also a hub for new life with classes for pregnant women, mother & baby, kids yoga, and teens yoga and a range of workshops from Aerial Yoga to Sound Baths and Breath Work.

We are all sending so much positive energy and love to Ms Ellie Fullalove (yes that’s her very apt surname!) who is recovering from an accident abroad. Here she is earlier this year taking a power nap on our 200-hour training and playing with some more challenging postures. Ellie has such amazing strength and agility - both physical and mental - truly inspiring to see that despite all that has happened, she is feeling grateful for her recovery, her practice, her life.

How does one define what's authentically yogic?

Join Daniel Simpson to consider how much has changed in the history of yoga, and what that means for authenticity.

This interactive online session of the Yoga Philosophy Club offers space for reflection,
discussion, and inquiry around topics including cultural appropriation and personal integrity. We
will also explore how to innovate respectfully.

Among other questions on the agenda:
• Do practices have to be old to be authentic?
• Who defines what is traditional and on what basis?
• Which criteria help us decide what is and isn’t yogic?
• Has there ever been any such thing as “one true yoga”?
• What keeps new methods anchored in earlier ideas?

Yamuna Zake how lucky we have all been that you came into our lives. You healed us, taught us, inspired us, shared your incredible wisdom, made us laugh, and spread so hope and love. Your visionary bodyrolling work will be carried on by all of us teachers who were honoured to have studied with you. Here are some memories from our training at the Shala. Gingi Lee 💛

Yoga Nidra is not simply rest. It is guided rest with awareness. And that distinction changes everything. 🌙

Unlike sleep, where awareness naturally fades and shifts, Yoga Nidra gently invites you to remain present as the body moves into deeper and deeper states of rest. The result is a unique space between waking and sleeping that science is only beginning to understand.

Swipe to find out more about what actually happens in Yoga Nidra and how it differs from sleep.
