Everyone talks about calming the FRONT of the brain when intrusive thoughts take over.
But what if we’re missing something at the BACK?

Here’s why we look there too…
The back of the brain, particularly the occipital and posterior areas, is where we see a lot of the brain’s natural alpha activity.
Alpha is associated with a more relaxed and regulated brain state.

That’s a very different way of looking at it.
Supporting healthy alpha activity may help the brain move towards a calmer, more regulated state. But we wouldn’t say that increasing occipital alpha simply switches intrusive thoughts off. The science is more nuanced than that.

And this is exactly why we don’t look at one symptom in isolation.
When we work with a child, we look at the bigger picture regulation, movement, posture, primitive reflexes, sensory processing and how the brain and body are working together.

Then we build the programme around what we find.

I wish I knew about poi years ago.

Not as a party trick. As a tool that actually helps the brain organise itself. Poi asks both sides of the body to work together in real time. Tracking. Timing. Rhythm. That’s the same kind of input we use every day in brain based therapy with the kids we work with.

Since I started training in it myself, I’ve felt the difference. Better coordination. A steadier mood. More energy through the day.

If your child struggles with coordination, or just seems out of sync with their own body, this is worth knowing about. It’s not about trying harder. It’s about giving the brain the right input.

More families should know this exists.

His mind wouldn’t stop racing. Not even at rest.

That’s what brought this boy to us. So we mapped his brain activity, eyes closed and eyes open, to see what was actually happening underneath it all.
What we found: his brain’s natural calm rhythm was running slower than expected for his age. And even once he was alert, slow, unsettled activity was still sitting over the left front of his brain, the area tied to focus and staying steady. A pattern we see often in kids caught in anxiety and racing thoughts. The nervous system just can’t find its own off switch.

So we built an intensive around it. Neurofeedback over the back of the brain, where that calming rhythm naturally lives. Training across both sides too, so neither hemisphere is carrying more than its share. Then we layered in micro Tesla magnetic field stimulation to help lock those changes in faster, and vagal activation to bring his body’s own calming response online alongside the brainwork.

By the end of the week: a real shift. Calmer. More balanced between the two sides.

His parents told us his racing thoughts had eased, that he seemed quieter in his own head, and that he was falling asleep easier than he had in a long time.

We’re not forcing calm onto a child. We’re giving his brain and body real practice finding it, from every angle at once.

It might not be about the words. It might be about the eyes.
Reading is not just seeing letters. It is a skill that needs the eyes to track smoothly across the page, the brain to process direction and the two sides of the brain to work together.
If your child mixes up b and d, loses their place while reading, or reads word by word instead of flowing, this could be why.
One simple activity we use at Hopeful Neuron is the arrow exercise.
Rows of coloured arrows pointing in different directions. Your child points to and names each one, left to right, row by row.
Here is where it gets fun. You can personalise it to your child’s interests.
Blue arrow, name a city.
Yellow arrow, name a football club. Perfect for a football mad child.
Green arrow, name an animal.
Once your child has mastered that, add the challenge level. Instead of pointing the same way as the arrow, point the opposite direction. Arrow points left, your child points right. Arrow points up, they point down.
This forces the brain to stop, override the automatic response and choose the opposite one instead. That is inhibition control, one of the most important executive function skills for focus and self control.
It sounds too simple to matter. But this one activity now trains eye tracking, directionality, processing speed, brain coordination and inhibition control, all in one go.
Five minutes a day. No equipment needed. Just a printed page and some focus.

If your child still isn’t clear when they talk, check how they move first. You’ve done the speech therapy. Practised the sounds a hundred times. Some days it’s better, some days the words still come out jumbled, and nobody can explain why progress has stalled. Speech is motor planning. Getting the tongue, lips and jaw to fire in the right sequence uses the same brain systems as getting arms and legs to fire in the right sequence, like swinging bar to bar on the monkey bars. Dr Robert Melillo points to this link directly. A child whose body struggles to sequence a smooth movement is often the same child whose mouth struggles to sequence a smooth word. Build the body’s motor planning and you’re building the same circuitry speech depends on. If the body can’t plan the movement, don’t expect the mouth to plan the word.

The vagus nerve runs from your brain down through your neck and connects to your heart, lungs and gut. When it’s working well, your body can calm down after stress. When it’s stuck, your child can get trapped in fight or flight, even when nothing is actually wrong.

This shows up as anxiety, meltdowns, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge for no clear reason.

The Stanley Rosenberg exercise is a simple way to reset the vagus nerve and tell the body it’s safe.

Try this with your child:

Lie down comfortably. Interlace your fingers and rest them behind your head. Keeping your head still, move only your eyes to look to the right. Hold until you or your child gets a spontaneous swallow, sigh or yawn. Then look to the left and repeat.

That small shift can help calm the nervous system and ease anxious feelings.

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements babies are born with. They help a baby survive the first months of life, things like turning the head when a cheek is touched, or gripping tightly when something touches the palm.
Normally, as the brain develops, these reflexes fade away. The child doesn’t need them anymore, so the brain switches them off and takes over with more controlled, voluntary movement instead.
But sometimes a reflex doesn’t fully switch off. It stays active in the background, long after it should have gone. When that happens, it can get in the way of things like balance, coordination, focus, emotional regulation, or reading and writing.
This is called a retained primitive reflex.
It’s not something a child is doing wrong. It’s not a discipline issue or a lack of trying. It’s a wiring issue, and wiring can be worked with.
That’s what the exercises are for. Specific, repetitive movements that help the brain finish the job it started, so the reflex can finally switch off and the child can move forward.
