Living with Essential Tremor or Tremor Dominant Parkinson's Disease?

If you’re living with Essential Tremor or Tremor Dominant Parkinson’s Disease, and your current medication is no longer helping - there may be another option.

MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound is an incisionless treatment that uses ultrasound waves to target the specific area of the brain causing tremor.

No scalpels. No implants. No hospital stay.

It’s delivered as an outpatient procedure at Queen Square Imaging Centre - and for many people, the results are immediate.

You might be eligible if:

- Medication is no longer managing your tremor

- Tremor is affecting your confidence or daily activities

- You’re able to have an MRI and CT scan

If this sounds like you, we’re here to help.

Our team can talk you through the process, answer your questions, and explain what to expect - with no pressure and no obligation.

Take the first step to a tremor-free life!

Holding a cup of tea. Writing your name. Small things, until they’re not.

Tremor takes many forms.

Essential tremor is the most common, and often inherited.

Parkinson’s tremor appears at rest.

Dystonic tremor occurs alongside abnormal posturing and Cerebellar tremor is a slow shaking of limbs getting worse as a sufferer finishes a movement.

If medication has not worked, MR Guided Focused Ultrasound is an incisionless option showing 73 percent improvement in tremor severity in published data, delivered at Queen Square Imaging Centre with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Save this if you or someone you know is exploring tremor treatment options.

Did you know that not every tremor is caused by Parkinson’s disease?

A rest tremor occurs when a part of the body is relaxed and not actively moving.

While it is commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease, there are several possible causes and understanding the difference can be an important step towards diagnosis and treatment.

Our latest article explains:

• What a rest tremor is
• Common symptoms and causes
• How rest tremor differs from essential tremor
• How specialists diagnose tremor disorders
• The treatments available for people whose symptoms affect daily life

Whether you’re experiencing symptoms yourself or supporting a loved one, understanding tremor is the first step towards finding the right care.

Essential tremor affects an estimated 1 million people in the UK and is one of the most common movement disorders.

Writing, drinking from a cup, eating with utensils or using a phone can become progressively more difficult as tremor advances.

For patients whose symptoms are no longer adequately controlled with medication, this can affect independence, confidence and participation in daily life.

Advances in treatment have expanded the options available for eligible patients. MR Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) uses focused ultrasound energy guided by real-time MRI to precisely target areas of the brain associated with tremor.

The procedure is incisionless and performed with the patient awake, allowing tremor improvement to be assessed during treatment.

At Queen Square Imaging Centre, this service is delivered in collaboration with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at UCLH Private Healthcare, and patients remain under the care of their referring clinician throughout the treatment pathway.

Not all tremor is the same.

Essential tremor, Parkinson’s tremor, dystonic tremor and cerebellar tremor can all affect movement differently, which is why accurate diagnosis is so important.

Understanding the type of tremor is often the first step towards the right treatment pathway.

Medication is usually the first option, but when symptoms continue to affect daily life, procedural pathways may be considered, including MR Guided Focused Ultrasound, an incisionless treatment delivered at Queen Square Imaging Centre in collaboration with the functional neurosurgery team from the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery.

Clinical studies have demonstrated:

73% improvement in tremor severity
44.5% improvement in functional ability
