June 1st marks the start of Scoliosis Awareness Month 💚
Scoliosis is a condition that causes a 3D curvature in the spine and in many cases the cause is unknown (there are many research efforts ongoing to try and find the cause); this type of Scoliosis is called Idiopathic Scoliosis. The condition is much more common in girls and generally occurs in Adolescence between the ages of 10-15.
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is a condition I have. I was diagnosed when I was 12 after hiding the warning sings ⚠️ and the changes to my body for almost a year. Some early indications that someone might have scoliosis include leaning to 1 side, uneven shoulders, 1 shoulder or hip sticking out, the ribs sticking out on 1 side and clothes not fitting well.
Treatment options for this condition are also pretty limited. If you have severe scoliosis your only option is to undergo surgery to straighten out the spine to prevent further medical complaints such as reduced lung capacity.
This date also happens to be exactly 10 & 1/2 years since I underwent life changing surgery to correct my AIS in the hope I could live a more normal independent life as I grew up. Due to unexpected complications around finding a surgeon 👨⚕️ who could carry out my surgery I had to wait almost two years for the operation which left time for my spine to deteriorate. When I was first diagnosed I had a 55 degree thoracic curvature which only just fell into requiring surgery but by the time it came to my op it had increased to 80 degrees. Though I was lucky 🍀 despite its progression my spine was still flexible and I got a really good fusion result 🔩 and my spine is now classed as being “normal” as my curvature is less than 15 degrees.
I will forever be thankful that I had this surgery so I can lead the live I do now 💚
