The science behind hormones, body temperature and how to stay healthy during a heatwave.

Summer is supposed to be the season that leaves us feeling refreshed.

Longer days, sunshine, holidays and more time outdoors should lift our mood and encourage us to be more active. Yet for many women in their 40s and 50s, the opposite can happen.

If you've found yourself saying, "I never used to struggle with the heat like this," you're certainly not alone.

Perhaps you're waking in the night feeling too hot, your usual workout feels twice as hard, or simply sitting in the garden leaves you feeling exhausted. You may even find yourself feeling irritable, foggy or generally unlike yourself.

It isn't simply because it's hotter.

Hormonal changes during midlife can make your body much more sensitive to heat. Add a summer heatwave into the mix and it's easy to see why everything suddenly feels that little bit harder.

The good news is that understanding what's happening inside your body can help you support it in the right way.

GLP-1s in Midlife: Why Nutrition Matters More When You're Eating Less

In consultation, more women tell me some version of the same thing since starting a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro. They're just not hungry. Going a whole day without eating feels easy, sometimes easier than eating did before.

Alongside that, I've started noticing something else. Faces looking different. A fullness that was there before starting to disappear, even in women who haven't lost much weight yet.

Losing your appetite can feel like the win you've been chasing for years. But hunger was quietly doing a job for you the whole time you had it. It reminded you to eat, and roughly how much. Take that away, and nothing steps in automatically to do that job instead.

That's what I want to walk through here. Not whether GLP-1s work (for the right person, the evidence says they do), but what happens nutritionally once appetite stops driving your eating, and why the foundations I talk through with every patient matter more once food intake drops, not less.

There is no shortage of supplements marketed at women in midlife. Hormone support. Energy support. Menopause blends. Beauty blends. Sleep support. Stress support. The shelves, and the algorithm, are full of them.

Most women I see in clinic have tried several. Some feel a difference. Many don't. And almost all of them have the same question: am I taking the right ones?

That is usually the wrong question.

After 15 years in clinical practice, including a decade in private practice working with women at every stage of life, what I see most often is not a supplement problem. It is a foundations problem. The nutritional structure that supplements are designed to support is not yet in place. And without it, even the best product cannot do what it promises.

Most women in midlife don't have a supplement problem — they have a foundations problem. Learn what to have in place before buying anything.

In midlife, nutrition does not change overnight. It gradually becomes more about consistency and making sure key foundations are covered.

As oestrogen levels begin to fluctuate and gradually decline through the menopause transition, this can influence how the body responds to nutrients over time — particularly in areas like bone health, muscle maintenance, sleep and metabolic balance.

These are some of the most common nutritional shifts that can become more relevant over time:

Protein for maintaining muscle mass
Vitamin D for bone and immune health
Magnesium for sleep, muscle and nervous system function
Calcium for bone strength
Omega 3 for brain, heart and inflammation support
Fibre for gut health and metabolic balance

Most women are not “doing it wrong” — they are just not aware of where small gaps can build over time.

Food first always matters. Supplements can help support consistency where needed, but they are not a replacement for a balanced diet.

Follow for simple, evidence-led midlife nutrition clarity.

Many women in midlife start adding multiple supplements to support their energy, hormones, joints and overall health — often without a clear plan or understanding of what’s actually making a difference.

Over time, routines become complicated, expensive and difficult to maintain consistently.

The problem is rarely a lack of effort.

More often, it’s a lack of structure.

Her Vital Blend was created to simplify this into one complete daily blend — combining foundational nutrition with targeted midlife support in a way that feels practical, clear and sustainable.

So instead of trying to manage multiple different supplements, you have one simple routine you can actually stay consistent with.

Replace multiple supplements with one complete daily blend — a smarter, more consistent way to support your health in midlife.
