From her very first nursing role in the UK to leading one of the country’s largest private robotic surgery programmes, Mandi’s journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when talent is supported to grow.

After joining HCA UK as a scrub nurse 15 years ago, Mandi embraced every opportunity that came her way. Today, at London Bridge Hospital she leads a team of around 40 colleagues, oversees four operating theatres and continues to help us drive innovation in robotic surgery. And to top it off, Mandi has also recently completed an MBA alongside her full-time role.

For Mandi, it’s the colleagues and culture that has made the difference.

"The people I work with are genuinely one of the best parts of my job. I am surrounded by talented, dedicated professionals who bring skill, compassion and pride to everything they do. We support each other, we communicate openly, and together we create an environment where everyone feels they belong and can thrive.

There’s a genuine sense of collaboration and professionalism here. People want to do a good job and help each other do the same”

Mandi's story is a reminder that career growth isn’t always planned. Sometimes it’s built through curiosity, collaboration and the confidence to take the next opportunity.

“We consistently hear that effective healthcare must fit within the realities of people’s working lives and adapt across different life stages. This insight is shaping how we think about access for our patients - whether through expanding our network of locations or broadening our services, including areas such as fertility care and wider support offerings.” Paul Sanford, Primary and Urgent Care CEO, HCA Healthcare UK

The way people access healthcare is changing, particularly in business communities like Canary Wharf where working patterns are less predictable and time is limited.

As our local services continue to expand, including new GP and health screening services on Upper Bank Street and the introduction of fertility care at HCA UK Canary Wharf Outpatients, the focus is on improving access at the point people are most likely to use it.

“I first noticed something wasn’t right when I started having very heavy periods, I assumed that because of my age, it might just have been perimenopause.”

After experiencing heavy periods for months, 50-year-old Violeta believed her symptoms were linked to perimenopause. But when treatment made her symptoms worse, further investigations revealed that a fibroid she’d known about for years had almost doubled in size.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. While many don’t cause symptoms, others can lead to heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic pain and pressure, making it important to seek specialist advice if symptoms persist or change.

Following an MRI scan, Violeta was referred to Dr Paul Crowe, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at The Harborne Hospital, where she underwent uterine artery embolisation (UAE) - a minimally invasive treatment that shrinks fibroids while helping many women avoid major surgery.

This Fibroids Awareness Month, we’re sharing Violeta’s story to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of fibroids and the importance of finding the right treatment.

Whilst hot weather can put extra strain on your heart, there are some symptoms that shouldn’t be dismissed as simply being caused by the heat.

Shortness of breath, chest discomfort, heart palpitations and unexplained fatigue can all be signs that it’s time to seek medical advice. While these symptoms don’t always indicate a heart condition, recognising them early and getting checked can make all the difference.

In this carousel, Dr Oliver Guttmann, Consultant Cardiologist at The Wellington Hospital shares four signs to be aware of and explains why listening to your body matters.

At HCA UK, our experienced cardiology teams provide expert assessment, advanced diagnostics and personalised care, helping patients access the answers and treatment they need with confidence.

Most people have heard of breast, bowel and prostate cancer. But have you heard of sarcoma and did you know it’s a type of cancer. Because it’s so rare, sarcoma is often referred to as the ‘forgotten cancer’, which is why it’s important to raise awareness.

This Sarcoma Awareness Month we asked Dr Mahbubl Ahmed, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at HCA UK’s University College Hospital to answer some questions and help raise awareness about this rare form of cancer.
