Anyone else got a 2yr old who loves to run and hide at the phrase “bedtime!”

Who knows the rule is just 2 bedtime stories but always pushes for 3 or 4?

Who is suddenly “sooo thirsty” when you say it’s time to lay down.

Who wants “just 5 more cuddles”? (This one is tough)

Who just wants to build 1 more tower…🗼

?!?! What does your toddler try with you??

The truth is….
Consistency matters. If you are not consistent with your child you cannot expect them to be consistent with you. This goes for babies and toddlers (especially around the 2yr mark).

🛌Is bed time at 8pm or 8:27pm?
📚is it 2 bedtime stories or 5? Can I push it?!
💤 is wake up time at 7am and 8:45? Or whenever?
⭐ do I sometimes get to climb in the big bed but other times not?
🥛 do I sometimes get milk in the night if I wake up but other times not? When will I know the difference?
💡 sometimes the room is dark but other times there is a light on
🛎️ white noise sometimes other times not

It doesn’t entirely matter what it is you want to do when it comes to sleep choices but it matters a fair amount to your baby that they know what’s coming or what to expect. We all thrive in a world of mostly knowing what’s going to happen next.

For example, many parents will tell me that once they enter the sleep space and their baby goes in the sleeping bag and hears the white noise it’s like they know it’s nap time- they do know! Because this is what happens when my parents want me to know it’s time to sleep.

Life will have different days and events happening all the time so each day won’t be perfectly predictable but normal life can be pretty predictable and having some consistency really helps with children’s sleep 😴

My top tip! Start with a consistent wake up time every day. For example, no sleeping past 7am because that’s wake up time in your house. This will set the time and rhythm of the day.

🧠Most people don’t think of this as a sleep goal because many people are only thinking of how they themselves can get their baby to sleep.

‼️But did you ever think about how freeing it might be if your sleep goal was to train someone else to do bedtime or nap times?

✨Often as parents you might feel like you have to rush back from date night, choose between dinner OR a movie, only make reservations very late because you have to get the kids down first before leaving the house with the grandparents watching the monitors… sound familiar?

Imagine your dad or sister could do bedtime with your little one and it all go down without a hitch?! Well stop imagining and pop us a message today!

Wondering how the process will work? Here is a little summary to show you what it will look like.

Firstly getting to know you and your child is the MOST important part! This involves understanding your goals and boundaries and looking at your child’s current patterns and their 24hr sleep needs- These calculations are all data driven using the trusty Littles Baby Coach App . Then we write a specific plan just for you and your child which usually begins with improving your child’s sleep environment and making sure they have enough sleep pressure to sleep deeply at the right times. And lastly we will look at settling methods where needed such as shushing and patting etc.

We will be able to show your child’s sleep improvements using before and after data and graphs. And we will be there to support you everyday, answer all questions and set you up for future ongoing great sleep! We guarantee that you will have a better understanding of sleep and a new found knowledge base of how to improve sleep for your family.

The answer is YES! And I’ll use my children as a real example.

My daughter is currently on 1 nap a day and my son is on 3 naps a day. The reason it works is because I have always anchored the midday nap at 12-12:30. This means it always happens at this time. So both of my kids have this midday 1hr30min nap and then my son has an extra nap in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We do wind down routine together in one room and then my daughter lays down for her nap (remember I have trained her to do this) and then I go and get my son down. Both still have pitch black darkness and white noise playing for all naps and my daughter is almost 2.5yrs old.

I then wake my son up first at the end of nap time because he is less grumpy and will crawl around, and then my daughter as she needs a cuddle. Everyone has a drink and a snack so everyone is smiling and then we carry on with our day. If there are two parents even better as you can each take a child

If my kids fall asleep in the car I’ll ring ahead to warn my husband so he can come out and transfer one while I do the other. If I am alone I know my daughter needs transferring first and then I come back for my son. If I remember to I’ll have already blacked-out the rooms so it’s done when I am back from my outing. A little planning can help but life also happens spontaneously which is okay.

If you need help with naps, knowing when to drop them, how to add them in if you need to on some days, and to synchronise naps then send us a message for a little support 💤🤍

💤Have you noticed your baby waking more around the same time they are learning to crawl, sit or stand?!

This is a common thing and something that all babies and families must go through. It’s only temporary and they will soon master the skill. The best thing you can do it to remain the same and try not to introduce anything too new just to survive this phase- like feeding to sleep, co-sleeping, dummies etc. just remain the same and ride the wave. Your baby will know exactly what to do and will be consistent if you are consistent with them 💤

* if you have always done things like feed for comfort, dummy to soothe etc and it’s not “new” to your baby and your happy to continue with those things then that’s absolutely fine. I’m referring to new things that you haven’t been doing/don’t really want to be doing.

How do you know if your child is getting enough sleep? If your child is happy and smiley during the day- that’s the best sign really! It usually means they have had restful sleep and they are recharged and ready to play.

Sometimes I work with parents who are anxious and stressed because they have read somewhere that their child needs a particular number of hours of sleep and their child is falling short of this random number. But they have happy smiley babies. Take a step back and look at your child ☀️

🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♂️
Walking round and round while your baby fusses and cries? Wishing the earth would open and swallow you whole every time someone walks past because they are definitely judging you?!

Guys. Let me tell you something. Just because your phone pings and an app tells you it’s time for a nap… isn’t going to mean your baby is going to nap. You don’t have to force nap and you will only get frustrated and more anxious about your baby crying the more you try. I am not saying that you shouldn’t try help them to sleep with motion (because it is magical). I am saying your baby has to be ready for sleep or it’s not gonna happen.

🌊🌴Going on holiday and worried about how you’re going to manage sleep. Here are some tips for you 👆🏼

If you have a time difference of two hours or less you can either just stick to your local time in your home country. If more than two hours then swap to new time. Alternatively, you can start a few days before your holiday and slowly shift bedtime naps by 15-20mins each day so your at local time when you arrive there.
