Yesterday in clinic, I saw a 3-year-old with severe, whole-body eczema. Her mum broke down in tears. She had stopped taking her daughter to the park because other parents crowd around her with unsolicited advice. She's even had to pull her out of nursery because she kept being sent home due to her itching, which was getting worse at nursery.
Later that evening, I came across a Facebook post from another mum, desperately asking for alternative treatments for her child's eczema because she no longer trusted her doctors.
Both of these situations were heartbreaking—and sadly, not rare.
Eczema is not "just dry skin." It can be incredibly difficult to live with, and the impact it has on children and their families is often underestimated.
The encouraging part is that there are effective treatments available. With the right support, especially from clinicians experienced in eczema and allergies, many children can experience real relief. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to turn, please know that help does exist, and you're not alone.
