How I Manage Anxiety and Difficult Thoughts in My Alcohol Recovery

“Some days, my mind feels crowded with worries. In recovery, I am learning that I do not have to act on every thought or solve everything at once.”

In this video, I share my personal approach to managing anxiety and difficult thoughts: pausing, questioning assumptions, taking small steps and talking to someone I trust.

Through “Dictatorship of Alcohol.com”, I explore the social pressure that encourages us to reach for a drink when life feels difficult. Through “Quit for Good.net”, I share my experience of recovery and help people work towards a life free from alcohol.

These are reflections from my own experience. If anxiety keeps affecting your daily life, seeking professional support can be a valuable step.

“How I Took Back Control of My Life from Alcohol | 15+ Years Sober”

For years, I accepted alcohol as a normal part of life. It was there at celebrations, after work and whenever people gathered. I rarely questioned how much that drinking culture influenced my choices.

In this video, I share my personal experience of recognising the “Dictatorship of Alcohol” and taking back control. I talk about the pressure to belong, being honest with myself and learning to say, “No, thank you,” without having to defend my decision.

After more than fifteen years sober, my experience shapes my work through “Dictatorship of Alcohol.com” and “Quit for Good.net”. I want to help people recognise social pressure, make their own choices and find support when alcohol becomes a struggle.

Have you ever felt pressured to drink to fit in? Share your experience in the comments. Subscribe for more personal stories about sobriety, recovery and taking back control.

“How I Use the Dictatorship of Alcohol to Handle Society’s Pressure to Drink”

Why can saying “no” to a drink feel so difficult? At celebrations, in conversations and even among friends, drinking is often treated as the expected choice.

I use the “Dictatorship of Alcohol” to name that pressure and notice when it is influencing a decision. Once I recognise it, I can pause, decide what I want and say “no” without feeling I owe anyone an explanation.

In this video, I explore how we learn society’s drinking rules, why refusal can feel uncomfortable and how respecting someone’s “no” helps everyone make a freer choice.

“How I Stayed Sober for 16 Years | Quit For Good and Challenge the Dictatorship of Alcohol”

Why is drinking so often treated as the social default—and why are people sometimes expected to explain their decision not to drink?

“Dictatorship of Alcohol” challenges the social conditioning, pressure and expectations that can make alcohol appear necessary for belonging, celebration and relaxation.

“Quit For Good” offers hope, encouragement and support to people who want to change their relationship with alcohol and build a healthier future.

Together, these two projects share one important message: everyone deserves the freedom to make their own choices without pressure, judgement or stigma.

Whether you are beginning recovery, supporting someone else or simply choosing not to drink, your decision deserves respect.

How Barnie the Horse Exposed My Grandfather’s Drinking Routine in One Morning

My dad loved telling this true family story about his father Bernie, a milkman in 1920s King’s Cross, and Barnie, the horse who knew their round by heart.

At every pub delivery, Bernie received a pint and Barnie received hay. When Bernie tried to hide the routine from his manager, Barnie stopped at the pubs anyway. The story always brought laughter to our family, but Bernie lost his job.

For me, it shows how easily alcohol can become part of an ordinary working day when everyone treats it as normal. That is the influence I call the “Dictatorship of Alcohol.”

What part of Bernie and Barnie’s story stayed with you?

Alcohol and the Working Day: The Hidden Cost of Drinking Culture

What does alcohol cost the working day—and how can workplaces respond with understanding?

This video explores sickness absence, reduced productivity at work, and working lives cut short by alcohol-related harm. It also asks why drinking can feel expected at conferences, celebrations and after-work events, while saying “no” can feel difficult.

Public Health England reported an established estimate of £7.3 billion a year in productivity costs to England. That estimate includes sickness absence, unemployment and premature death. It is an older combined estimate, **not the cost of absenteeism alone**, and Public Health England said its methods needed updating.

A separate estimate published by the Institute of Alcohol Studies in 2024 put the annual cost to England’s wider economy at £5.06 billion. The two figures come from different analyses and should not be treated as directly comparable.

Through the Dictatorship of Alcohol, I want to challenge the pressure to drink without judging the people affected by it. Quit For Good offers support and hope to those who want to change their relationship with alcohol.
