CDS are early pioneers in developing and promoting routine ultrasound assessment of the Fallopian Tubes. A contrast medium, or fluid, is gently flushed through the tubes and visualised using high resolution transvaginal ultrasound scanning.

Initially termed HSS by CDS, the technique is now commonly known as HyCoSy following more recent commercial involvement.

NOTE: It remains of great concern that social media and patient experience report HyCoSy as a “painful” procedure! CDS personnel have carried out thousands of these tubal tests over many decades. Carried out by experienced gynaecologists and ultrasound specialists, we confirm that very, very few patients indeed have suffered from any significant degree of discomfort. We question why so many patients appear to have had such a problem!

HyCoSy procedures at CDS always include a comprehensive gynaecological (transvaginal ultrasound) examination. A (virtual) 3D evaluation of the uterine (womb) cavity and endometrium (lining) can be offered as part of the same procedure if clinically indicated. Patients are welcome and indeed encouraged to arrange a consultation with Mr Bill Smith, Head of CDS in order to address any aspect of the above and for reassurance.

Bill Smith at Clinical Diagnostics is my first choice for diagnostic ultrasound referrals. His expertise extends beyond producing high-quality imaging, he genuinely collaborates with referring clinicians to interpret ultrasound findings within the patient's overall clinical picture. That willingness to work together ensures investigations are meaningful, clinically relevant, and focused on improving patient outcomes. Bill's professionalism, clinical insight and commitment to collaborative, patient-centred care make him an outstanding clinician whom I recommend without hesitation.

CDS is recognised widely for its work in key areas of gynaecology and women’s healthcare generally. This has largely been the result of its close working relationship with leading clinical consultants. The ability to directly refer patients to an established, highly experienced gynaecologist has proved to be of tremendous benefit to patients attending CDS. Continuity of care involving close liaison between diagnostic units and clinicians remains an essential ingredient in terms of high-quality patient management.

Following an initial experience in this field, I accepted an ultrasound post at King’s College Hospital with the world-leading expert Professor Stuart Campbell and trained with him. I chose this pathway as an alternative to entering medical school.

I returned to the Royal Free and was invited to take over as head of obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound services. From there was introduced to and became increasing involved in the world of infertility. I worked very closely supporting consultants dealing with first-line infertility problems. In addition I was part of the team to produce one of the first test tube babies worldwide.

I was very involved in introducing and promoting the utilisation of medical ultrasound in key areas of reproductive medicine and general gynaecology such as detection of uterine and ovarian tumours as well as endometriosis and miscarriage. During this time I was involved in developing transvaginal scanning. I am recognized worldwide for my pioneering work in establishing this technique as a crucial part of women’s healthcare generally.

CDS offers what can be termed as “comprehensive” cycle monitoring.

Advanced transvaginal scanning can identify gynaecological problems which could make conception challenging as well as preventing normal development of early pregnancy.

One of our many pregnancy successes kindly shared with her story with us.

'It's not an overstatement to say I owe everything to Bill and , I'm so lucky that he was recommended to me by a family friend. In fact I have gone on to recommend him to at least 10 more people who were trying to start a family and will continue to talk about him to anyone that needs him!"

The lining of the uterine (womb) cavity is called the endometrium. The menstrual period which occurs each month is shedding of the endometrium. Endometriosis is a condition where the same cells as found in the endometrium occur elsewhere in the body. The most common sites where endometriosis is found are within the pelvis (pelvic endometriosis) or the wall of the uterus (adenomyosis).
