I was reminded of something from my own life while recording my latest podcast episode.

Back in 2008, when the financial crash hit, I remember feeling completely overwhelmed by fear, frozen to the spot, unable to think clearly. What I wasn’t doing was taking a step back and looking objectively with what was in front of me or able to see the resources I already had which could have helped me and know what I could have done next.

I was caught up in the emotion of the situation and looking back, I can see that feeling powerless became part of what kept me stuck for years.
It took a long time for me to understand the relationship between our thoughts, our emotions and the actions we take.

My guest experienced circumstances far more extreme than mine, including homelessness, but something he said really resonated with my own experience.

When everything breaks down, we have to learn to step back, take inventory, look at the possibilities and decide what we can do next.

That doesn't mean ignoring how we feel, it means not allowing how we feel in that moment to convince us that we have no choices.

The emotion is real but it isn't necessarily the whole story.

I've written about this, and what Emotional Wholeness means to me, in my latest Substack.

True growth never arrives when things are comfortable and predictable.

We like to imagine progress as a steady, graceful climb, but real transformation almost always begins in the dark, when the ground beneath our feet feels uncertain and the plans we spent years building fall apart.

Hardship strips away the noise and forces us to look at who we actually are beneath our titles, routines, and illusions of control. Failure stings, not just because it hurts our pride, but because it leaves us raw and exposed.

Yet it is precisely in those moments—when things are messy, complicated, and entirely unresolved—that something deeper takes root.

You don’t discover your true strength by avoiding the storm; you find it by standing in the middle of the rain, acknowledging how much it hurts, and choosing to take the next breath anyway.

The courage to keep showing up when you don't have all the answers is what shapes a genuine soul.
Growth isn't about becoming bulletproof or pretending the road isn't heavy.

It’s about letting the struggle soften your edges into empathy, teaching you resilience, and proving to yourself that even when life breaks wide open, you have the capacity to rebuild something wiser, kinder, and far more enduring.

Have you ever wondered whether you're still chasing the things you wanted 10, 20 or 30 years ago?

Once you reach midlife , this can throw up many questions about what and why you do what you do not because you still want them but because you've become so used to being that person.

I've been thinking about this a lot because the things that got us out of bed in our 20s and 30s aren't necessarily wrong, we may simply have changed.

Health is common subject in this instance.
After 40, perhaps health isn't always about doing more, it's about asking a different question:
What does healthy actually mean for me now?

I've written about identity, ambition, health and the sometimes uncomfortable process of realising that the person you were isn't necessarily the person you need to keep being.

The Identity Trap After 40 : When Who You Were Starts Getting in the Way of Who You're Becoming.
I'd love to know if this resonates with you.

Maybe the opposite of control isn't chaos, maybe it's trust.

I've spent years learning that I cannot control everything that happens in my life but I can choose how I meet it, with preparation, learning, growth I can change and perhaps there is also something even deeper:

Something beyond ourselves that we can trust when we don't have all the answers.

This is the final piece of my Six Dimensions of Wholeness ™️ series.
Spiritual Wholeness.
Perhaps it isn't simply the sixth dimension, it's the thread that connects them all.

What are you connected to beyond yourself?

What happens when food stops feeling simple?

For many of us, midlife changes our relationship with our bodies and sometimes, our relationship with food too.

Hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, stress, life transitions and the pressure to maintain a certain body shape can create anxiety around eating and appearance.

Eating disorders and disordered eating aren't confined to younger people. They can emerge or resurface in midlife too.

In my latest Unleash Your Inner Athlete podcast, I’m joined by , a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and counsellor, to explore what can really be going on beneath the surface.

We talk about:
👉 Why midlife can be a vulnerable time for disordered eating
👉 The role of control, anxiety and emotions
👉 How diet culture can affect the way we see our bodies
👉 Why nutrition and mental wellbeing are so closely connected
👉 And how we can begin to rebuild a healthier, more trusting relationship with food

Jane has almost 20 years of private practice experience and specialises in eating disorders, digestive health, blood sugar management and helping people move away from restrictive, diet-focused approaches.

This isn't about another diet or telling you what you should eat.
It's about understanding the relationship between food, body and mind and recognising when that relationship may need attention.

Our relationship with food can be about so much more than food, especially in midlife, changes to our bodies, emotions, identity and circumstances can affect how we eat and how we feel about ourselves.

In this week’s Unleash Your Inner Athlete podcast episode, I’m joined by Jane Reagan, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and counsellor, to explore the many factors that can sit underneath our relationship with food.

We talk about body changes, diet culture, emotions, control, mental wellbeing, rebuilding trust with food and our bodies and recognising when it’s time to seek professional support.

What if your environment is shaping more of you than you realise?

When we think about environmental health, we often think about clean air, organic food, pollution, nature, where we live and work but I want to cast the net wider.

What if the environment around you is also influencing your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, identity and even what you believe is possible for you?

A conversation with a former podcast guest who studied anthropology got me thinking differently about this.
He talked about identity, culture and the rituals we all create often without even noticing them and it made me ask:
What are my daily rituals creating within me?

I explore this in the article, including my own experience of using scrolling as a way to distract myself from anxiety only to discover that the ritual was creating more anxiety, poorer sleep and a more negative experience of the day.

It's a reminder that we don't always have control over the world around us but we do have choices about how we interact with it.

In the article, I explore inner and outer environments, equilibrium, identity, rituals, culture, relationships, stress and the choices we can make when life doesn't give us the environment we would choose.

Environmental Wholeness may be very different from what you think it is.
What if creating a healthier environment starts not only with changing what's around you, but with changing what you're creating within you?

Read the new article and see what you think.

What if having lots of friends isn't the sign of a healthy social life?

We often assume that the more people we have around us, the more connected we must be but here's a question we don't often ask:
How many of those people would actually be there when the s**t hits the fan?

You can have a diary packed with dinners, drinks, parties and social events and still feel incredibly lonely and you can spend an evening completely alone and feel perfectly content.

That's the difference between being alone and being lonely.
Social wholeness isn't about being more sociable, having hundreds of friends or constantly filling your diary.
It's about:
→ Knowing who you can truly rely on
→ Having relationships where you can be yourself
→ Being comfortable in your own company
→ Having the courage to say yes when fear is holding you back
→ And knowing when saying no is exactly what you need

I know this because I've always been someone who enjoys my own company.

In this article, I share the story of how I nearly talked myself out of going alone to an Indian wedding with more than 600 people and how it became one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Maybe the question isn't:
“Do I have enough people in my life?”
Maybe it's:
“Do the people in my life expand it?”

Perhaps even more importantly
“Would I notice if they weren't there and would they notice if I wasn't?”

I explore what Social Wholeness really means, why solitude can be healthy, when isolation becomes a problem, and give you a simple 7-Day Social Wholeness Challenge to try for yourself.

How much of what you worry about today is actually happening to you?

We are surrounded by uncertainty.
Conflict.
Negative headlines.
Economic worries.
Rising costs.
Concerns about work and business.
Worries about your children's future.
Questions about what the next few years might look like.

Even when nothing has actually happened to us, our emotions can react as though it has.

Have you ever read something and started to worry.
We imagine what might happen, then this worry becomes a story and before we know it, we're living in the emotion of something that hasn't happened.

This is where emotional wholeness matters.

Learning to recognise what triggers you, understand the story you're creating, separate what you feel from what you know, and choose how you respond.

That's what I've explored in my Emotional Wholeness Toolkit.
It's practical work to help you:
▪️ recognise your emotional patterns
▪️ understand your triggers
▪️ uncover the story beneath the emotion
▪️ create space between feeling and reacting
▪️ build better boundaries
▪️ develop an emotional recovery plan

You can't control everything happening around you but you can learn to control what happens next inside you.
