Common Foot Problems Seen by UK Podiatrists: When Should You Seek Professional Help?

Our feet work hard every day, carrying us through thousands of steps, supporting our posture, and absorbing the impact of everyday life. Yet foot health is often overlooked until pain or discomfort starts affecting daily activities.

As podiatrists, we regularly treat a wide range of foot conditions. While some problems may seem minor initially, early treatment can often prevent long-term pain and complications. Here are some of the most common foot problems we see in clinics across the UK.

1. Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses are among the most common reasons people visit a podiatrist. They develop when the skin thickens in response to pressure or friction, often caused by poorly fitting footwear, abnormal foot mechanics, or bony prominences.

Symptoms:

- Thick, hard areas of skin
- Pain when walking or standing
- Tenderness under pressure points

How a Podiatrist Can Help:

Professional removal of painful corns and hard skin can provide immediate relief. More importantly, a podiatrist can identify the underlying cause and recommend footwear advice, padding, orthotics, or gait correction to prevent recurrence.

2. Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Heel pain is one of the most frequently reported foot complaints in adults. Plantar fasciitis, now often referred to as plantar fasciopathy, occurs when the thick band of tissue on the sole of the foot becomes irritated.

Symptoms:

- Sharp pain under the heel
- Pain worse first thing in the morning
- Discomfort after prolonged standing or walking

Treatment Options:

A podiatrist may recommend stretching exercises, footwear modifications, orthotic therapy, shockwave therapy, or activity adjustments to reduce strain on the plantar fascia.

3. Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can be extremely painful and may lead to infection if left untreated. They occur when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin.

Symptoms:

- Redness and swelling around the nail
- Pain when wearing shoes
- Infection or discharge

Treatment Options:

Podiatrists can safely remove the offending nail spike, reduce infection risk, and where necessary perform minor nail surgery to prevent the problem returning.

4. Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal nail infections are common in the UK and can affect one or multiple toenails.

Symptoms:

- Thickened nails
- Yellow, brown or white discolouration
- Brittle or crumbly nails

Treatment Options:

A podiatrist can diagnose the infection, recommend appropriate treatments, and advise on preventing reinfection through footwear and hygiene management.

5. Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot is a fungal skin infection that commonly develops between the toes and can spread across the sole of the foot.

Symptoms:

- Itching and irritation
- Peeling or cracked skin
- Redness and soreness

Treatment Options:

Early treatment with antifungal medications combined with practical foot care advice usually resolves the condition quickly.

6. Verrucae (Plantar Warts)

Verrucae are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and commonly appear on the soles of the feet. They can affect people of all ages but are particularly common in children and young adults.

Symptoms:

- Rough skin lesions on the sole
- Small black dots within the lesion
- Pain when walking or standing

Treatment Options:

Many verrucae resolve naturally, but persistent or painful cases may benefit from professional treatment and monitoring.

7. Bunions

A bunion develops when the big toe joint gradually moves out of alignment, creating a prominent bump on the side of the foot. Bunions can become increasingly painful over time and may make finding comfortable footwear difficult.

Symptoms:

- Visible bump beside the big toe
- Joint pain and inflammation
- Difficulty finding suitable shoes

Treatment Options:

Conservative management includes footwear advice, padding, orthotic support, and exercises. Severe cases may require referral for surgical assessment.

8. Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are particularly common during warmer months or in individuals with dry skin.

Symptoms:

- Dry, thickened skin around the heel
- Painful fissures or splits
- Bleeding in severe cases

Treatment Options:

Regular podiatry care, professional debridement, moisturising regimes, and footwear recommendations can significantly improve heel health.

9. Diabetic Foot Problems

People living with diabetes face an increased risk of foot complications due to reduced circulation and nerve damage. Even minor injuries can become serious if not detected early.

Common Concerns:

- Loss of sensation
- Foot ulcers
- Delayed wound healing
- Increased infection risk

Regular diabetic foot assessments are essential for maintaining long-term foot health.

10. General Foot Pain and Biomechanical Issues

Many patients experience foot, ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain that originates from the way they walk. Poor biomechanics can place excessive strain on joints, muscles, and ligaments.

Common Causes:

- Flat feet
- High arches
- Leg length differences
- Overpronation
- Sports-related injuries

A biomechanical assessment can identify the root cause and help improve movement, comfort, and overall wellbeing.

Taking a Holistic Approach to Foot Health

At Holistic Podiatry, we believe healthy feet are the foundation of a healthy body. Rather than simply treating symptoms, we aim to identify the underlying causes of foot pain and dysfunction. Through expert assessment, personalised treatment plans, footwear advice, and preventative care, we help our patients stay active, comfortable, and confident.

If you are experiencing foot pain, nail problems, skin conditions, or mobility concerns, don't wait for the problem to worsen. Early intervention often leads to faster recovery and better long-term outcomes.
