Did you know Mountsorrel has a Tiny Forest? You can find out more, and see it for yourself, on Weds 8th July.

Earthwatch Europe are hosting a FREE afternoon of discovery and citizen science at the Mountsorrel Tiny Forest, following its planting last December.

This coming Wednesday 8 July, two members of the team will be hosting a Discovery Day. In the morning, they're running two planned sessions with a local school, but in the afternoon, they'd love for members of the local community to join them anytime from 12:30 - 16:00.

🌳🥬There will be light refreshments and snacks, the chance to get involved in collecting scientific data that helps monitor how the Tiny Forest is developing (contributing to international research into this innovative planting approach), and plenty of opportunities to chat about nature.🌳🥬

How to Tell Sciatica to Take a Hike: Quick Wins for Nerve Pain Relief
Ah, sciatica—the uninvited guest that turns “ouch” into a full-blown sci-fi horror show shooting down your leg. If the sciatic nerve is throwing a tantrum (thanks to a pesky disc, tight muscles, or just life being life), you don’t have to suffer in silence. Most cases ease up in weeks with smart self-care. But remember, I’m not your doctor—chat with a pro before diving in, especially if things feel serious.
Step 1: Ice It Like You Mean It (Then Bring the Heat)
Start with ice packs wrapped in a towel—15–20 minutes on the sore spot, a few times a day. It’s like telling the inflammation, “Not today, buddy.” After a couple days, switch to heat (heating pad or a luxurious warm bath) to loosen everything up. Alternating? Chef’s kiss for relief.
Step 2: Move It or Lose It (But Gently!)
Bed rest sounds tempting, but it’s basically inviting stiffness to the party. Get up and walk short distances. Your body thanks you for not turning into a couch potato.
Step 3: Stretches That Actually Work (No Yoga Mat PhD Required)
Keep it simple and stop if it hurts more. Do these a couple times a day:
• Knee-to-Chest: Lie back, hug one knee to your chest like you’re comforting a grumpy friend. Hold 20–30 seconds per side. Great for decompressing the lower back.
• Figure 4 Stretch: Ankle over opposite knee, pull gently. Targets those cranky piriformis muscles in your glutes—pure magic for many sufferers.
• Glute Bridge: Lie down, knees bent, lift hips like you’re offering the ceiling a high-five. Builds support without drama.
• Bonus: Seated spinal twists or basic hamstring stretches for extra relief.
Step 4: Quick Fixes and Smart Habits
• Fix your posture—lumbar support when sitting, no marathon slouching sessions.
• Long-term hero move: Strengthen that core with walking, swimming, or gentle yoga once you’re past the worst.
Sciatica loves to linger if you ignore it, but consistent little efforts send it packing. Most folks feel way better without fancy interventions.
Pro Tip: Listen to your body. If the pain sticks around, gets worse, or brings friends like numbness or weakness, skip the blog and head to a healthcare provider or therapist. They’ve got the real tools.
You’ve got this! Move smart, stretch kindly, and soon you’ll be back to living life without that electric zinger down your leg. Drop a comment if a particular stretch becomes your new best friend—what worked for you?
Not medical advice—just practical wisdom with a side of personality. Stay strong! 🚀
