Sometimes the carer needs a little care too. ❤️

Yesterday was one of those days.

One of my clients lives with dementia, and after a particularly difficult incident at home I spent time cleaning up, throwing away the contents of a fridge and freezer, reassuring him and trying to put everything right. By the time I finally made it to Tesco to replace what had been lost, I was exhausted, stressed and doing my usual best impression of someone who was absolutely fine.

The lovely lady on the checkout knows us because I regularly take my client shopping there. She took one look at me and simply asked, “Has he been difficult today?”

I have absolutely no idea how she knew. But that was it. The mask slipped and I burst into tears.

She got up, came out from behind her checkout and gave me the biggest, warmest hug. She reminded me that she sees me with him regularly, that I’m a good carer, and that I’m allowed to admit that sometimes dementia is hard.

And goodness, I needed to hear that yesterday.

We talk a lot about kindness in care, but sometimes kindness comes from completely unexpected places. A few words and a hug from someone who noticed I wasn’t quite myself changed the rest of my day.

So, a little thank you to my lovely Mablethorpe Tesco lady. I don’t even know if you realised how much I needed that hug — but you gave this carer a little bit of care when she needed it most. ❤️

Really proud to have completed the new Professional Carers Network Professional Standards 💙💛

I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Professional Carers Network and everything it stands for. Being self-employed doesn’t mean being on your own — having Maria and the Network behind us, supporting, guiding and raising standards within professional care, means a great deal to me.

A huge amount of work must have gone into creating these new Professional Standards, and I was genuinely excited to work through them and receive my certificate.

For my clients and their families, it’s another reassurance that the care I provide is not only personal and from the heart, but safe, legal and professional too.

Thank you Maria — very proud to be part of it. 💙💛

Sometimes the simplest activities bring the biggest smiles.

This afternoon I thought I’d try a tablet game as something a bit different — and it turned into such a lovely little activity. Colourful, fun, a little bit competitive, and full of concentration. 😄

It is always lovely to see how much enjoyment can come from small, relaxed moments like this. No pressure, no fuss — just something fun to do together.

These are the moments that make care feel personal, meaningful and joyful. 🥰

Tadahhh! 🎉 Another course completed!🎊

I’ve successfully completed the 2026 Manual Handling for Health and Social Care course through the Professional Carers Network . 📚✅

Another certificate for the collection and more valuable knowledge to support the safe, professional care I provide. Every day is a chance to keep learning and improving! 💙

Today I took a client out for fish and chips in Alford for the very first time. 🐟🍟

He remembered the place from when he used to drive himself there, and that made it feel even more special — familiar, safe, and meaningful.

I’m honestly quite proud of thinking of this little outing. Sometimes care is about spotting what might still bring comfort, confidence, and a bit of joy.

It wasn’t just fish and chips. It was lunch on his knees, a short drive, a familiar place, a chat, and helping someone reconnect with a piece of their old routine. 💛

Small steps, but a big ( very tasty I may add 🐟🍟) moment.

One of today’s little care moments that made me smile…

My client may not remember what they did three minutes ago, but absolutely beat me at Connect 4 today. 🤣

We played over 20 games — fast, focused, competitive and full of laughter. It was brilliant.

It was such a lovely reminder that memory loss does not take away personality, humour, skill, or the ability to enjoy the moment.

Sometimes the best part of care is not the “big” things. It is sitting together, playing a game, sharing a laugh, and seeing someone light up in the here and now.

Today was one of those days. 🥰

Being part of Professional Carers Network has been such a positive thing.

Through the network, I connected with another care professional, and we are now both involved in supporting the same family — one of those lovely examples of how networking can turn into real teamwork.

Care is not just about covering hours. It is about communication, trust, patience, and helping someone stay as independent as possible, while knowing support is close by.

A quiet afternoon today with my client settled and having a little nap. Calm, consistent care really does matter. 🥰

Monday morning started just right… 🌸
One of my lovely clients finally let me cut a few flowers from her beautiful garden — and look at this gorgeous bouquet! 😍
Her garden is absolutely bursting with colour at the moment. Such a simple little moment, but it completely made my morning. 💐

A little weekend away in Norfolk.

One of my lovely clients recommended this area to me, and I can absolutely see why. Castle Acre is beautiful — peaceful, historic, full of charm, and perfect for a slow wander.

We’re here for my husband’s birthday, taking one night away to pause, recharge, and enjoy a change of scenery.

Sometimes the best recommendations come from the people you meet through work. Feeling grateful for kind clients, beautiful places, and a little bit of time to breathe. ❤️

🥳 7️⃣years self-employed today🥳 Blimey… what a journey.

I’m currently sitting here supporting a lovely lady so she can get to the hairdressers 💇‍♀️— and really, that sums up so much of what these 7 years have been about.

People have died.
People have had to move into nursing homes.📉
People have come out of hospital and, with the right support, have been able to stay safely at home.📈

There have been tears, laughter, problem-solving, difficult days, beautiful moments, and plenty of “right, how are we going to make this work?” situations.

Being self-employed can be tiring. Hard. Harsh sometimes. There are no guarantees, no safety net, and not everyone will understand you or the way you work. Sometimes things end, and that can be painful.

But reading lately how other self-employed people are opening up about the reality behind the scenes has made me feel less alone. It reminded me that it isn’t just me — this path can be tough, even when you love what you do.

I’ve always tried to bring ideas, practical solutions, patience, common sense, and proper care to my work. No cutting corners. No “that’ll do”. Always high quality, always with the person at the centre of it.

This last year has also brought new things. I became a member of the Professional Carers Network — good call, that was. I’ve also been getting more stuck in with the PPG of James Street Family Practice and becoming more involved in care support within the community , which feels like the right direction.

And, as I do every year, I’ve been handing out bunches of flowers to my customers — because celebrating on your own is a bit rubbish, isn’t it? Some things are better shared.

So here I am, 7 years later.

Still here, still caring, still learning ( courses lined up), still figuring things out — and overall, happy as can be. 😊
