Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is the site managed?

This is the official page for Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. You can also visit our website at www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk

Please note that this site is not monitored 24 hours a day and that cannot be used to give medical advice. In a medical emergency you should dial 999 and for non-urgent medical advice you should dial 111. This site does not have a dedicated team to ser

vice the enquiries made through it. The staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles.

2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected]

3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.

4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.

5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at [email protected].

This week has been !

Our Dietitian teams held their annual BLMK away day focusing on Health Inequalities. They learned from a guest speaker presenting on diversity in dietetics, followed by each dietetic service presenting an aspect of their work, where they had focused on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

The event was a success, with those in attendance enjoying the lectures, team working, and networking.

Una volunteers in the Charity shop at the L&D.

“I started volunteering about five and half years ago after seeing a post on Facebook for volunteers for the hospital charity shop.

“I'm currently volunteering in the new shop which opened at the end of last year in Oak Wing, which houses the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and other maternity services. We sell drinks, sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, crisps, sweets, chocolate and other merchandise, including baby teddies, knitted items, balloons and so much more.

“Profits from the shop go back to the charity to support patients, staff and many fundraising projects.

“I enjoy volunteering at the shop serving staff, patients and visitors, offering them a friendly face and any assistance required. I take pride in being part of the hospital community and knowing my volunteering goes a little way to benefit the charity.”

John is a Meet and Greet volunteer at Bedford Hospital.

“I retired as a teacher nearly two decades ago. I had already decided to take on some voluntary work that would be interesting, involve a lot of interactions with people and have some value. I view my role as an NHS volunteer as more than fulfilling all of those ambitions.

“I help many members of the public coming into the hospital to navigate their way and get to their destinations on time, as well as transferring pharmaceuticals and blood samples between various departments.

“I enjoy the personal interaction with members of the public, and with the hospital staff. I also consider that my efforts do help, in some degree, those very busy staff members carry out their duties, and hence benefit our valuable NHS. Certainly I intend to continue my volunteer work for as long as I am able.”

Annietta has been a volunteer at the L&D for eight years.

“I chose to volunteer at the L&D because it offers a wide variety of volunteering positions. I started my volunteer work with the Chaplaincy team, visiting patients in the wards, and I then joined the Blossom Service supporting end-of-life care. This is such a humble role, knowing that my presence means something to someone and their family. My role provides support to the end-of-life patients, bringing comfort to their family members and friends.

“Volunteering enables me to contribute and make a difference to society and the community. I am using my time to touch the lives of people who need support in the community. Being able to offer end-of-life patients loving, tender care gives me great satisfaction.”

Linda began volunteering for the Blossom Service at Bedford Hospital when she retired from her nursing career.

“I hold many happy memories of my nurse training days at Bedford and later as a qualified nurse working on the various wards. Volunteering gives me a sense of belonging and purpose in retirement, also an opportunity to give something back to the hospital where my nursing journey began.

“I chose specifically to become a Blossom volunteer, an end-of-life care companion. This gives me an opportunity to use my skills and experience to make a difference to patients and their families when they most need support.

“I believe passionately that we only have one chance to get end-of-life care right for the individual. The families of those we care for will have a lasting memory of their unique experience and how it made them feel at the time. I feel privileged and humbled to have this opportunity every time I volunteer."

This week is and we are shining a light on the ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

Debbie, Voluntary Services Manager, said: “Individually, our volunteers give their time to welcome, guide and support our patients, visitors and staff. Collectively, they are a force for kindness like no other – the absolute best of humanity. Actions don’t have to be big to have an impact: every smile, chat and errand run makes a difference to someone in our hospitals.

“Our 480+ volunteers put smiles on faces, take away anxiety, offering gentle reassurance and calm for so many people. They represent the very best of Bedfordshire Hospitals and we are truly grateful to them all.
“We have a wide variety of roles available so if you’d like to be part of this very special team, get in touch by emailing [email protected]

“Our volunteers are the sunshine that makes each day just that little bit brighter. We look forward to celebrating them this week.”

Dr Swinson is retiring this week after 25 years of outstanding commitment to Beds & Herts Breast Screening Service and the Breast Surgery team in Luton.

Dr Swinson’s lifelong commitment to service will continue into retirement as she joins a team of volunteers at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care.

Mr Paul Tisi, Medical Director, said: “On behalf of the trust and her department, I would like to thank Christine for all the work she has done for breast screening and wish her a happy and fulfilling retirement.”

For from 18 to 22 May, the dementia team at Bedfordshire Hospitals arranged a number of events to raise awareness of the condition, learn more about the signs of dementia, and understand how early action can make a difference.

From simulation training to an informative stand to afternoon tea parties with cake, fun games, and cheerful music from local choirs, it was a wonderful week for both the patients in our care and our staff.

Thank you all to everyone who supported, and got involved!
