One of the biggest misconceptions about aesthetic medicine is that every patient who walks through the door will be offered treatment.

In reality, some of the most important consultations are the ones where I advise a patient not to proceed.

Here are five common reasons:

1️⃣ Unrealistic expectations

Many patients believe a single treatment will completely solve their concerns. Whilst aesthetic treatments can produce excellent results, they often require a course of treatment and ongoing maintenance.

For example, polynucleotide treatments for the under-eye area typically require a series of treatments, often spaced around a month apart initially, before maintenance sessions are recommended. Expecting a dramatic transformation after one session can lead to disappointment.

2️⃣ Surgery would provide a better outcome

I'm always honest about the limitations of non-surgical treatments.

If a patient has significant skin laxity and is looking for a facelift-type result, I may advise that surgery would provide a more predictable, longer-lasting outcome and may ultimately be a better investment.

3️⃣ You're treating the wrong problem

Sometimes the treatment being requested isn't the treatment that will produce the best result.

A thorough consultation allows us to identify the underlying concern and create a personalised treatment plan.

4️⃣ The timing isn't right

There are occasions where delaying treatment is the safest and most sensible option.

Good aesthetic outcomes require careful planning, not rushed decisions.

5️⃣ The treatment isn't in your best interests

My priority is always achieving safe, natural-looking results. If I don't believe a treatment is appropriate, I will explain why and discuss alternative options.

The best consultations aren't about selling treatments—they're about providing honest advice.
