🔥 7 effective ways to reduce visceral fat

1. Create a modest calorie deficit
You don’t need a crash diet. Consistently eating slightly fewer calories than you use encourages your body to draw on stored fat. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can produce meaningful metabolic improvements.

2. Prioritise protein at each meal 🍗🥚
Protein helps preserve muscle while losing fat and can improve fullness. Include foods such as:

* Eggs
* Fish and seafood
* Chicken or lean meat
* Greek yoghurt
* Tofu, beans and lentils

3. Make fibre your friend 🥦
Aim for plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Fibre can improve fullness, digestion and blood-glucose control.

The catch?

More dopamine stimulation doesn’t necessarily mean more happiness.

Constant novelty, scrolling, gambling, highly rewarding foods and other instant-reward experiences can train the brain to keep seeking the next hit of stimulation.

🌾 Gluten and IBS: What’s Really Going On?

Does gluten trigger IBS? Not necessarily.

If you have IBS, you may notice that bread, pasta, cereals or other wheat-based foods seem to trigger bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

Gluten may not always be the culprit.

For some people with IBS, symptoms after eating wheat may be linked to FODMAPs — particularly fructans, a type of fermentable carbohydrate found in wheat.

These carbohydrates can be rapidly fermented by gut bacteria and may increase gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort in sensitive individuals.

There’s also an important distinction:

🔹 Coeliac disease — an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten.
🔹 Wheat allergy — an immune reaction to wheat proteins.
🔹 IBS — a disorder of gut–brain interaction that can cause abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits.

They are not the same condition.

So before removing gluten completely, it’s worth asking:

“Is it actually gluten causing my symptoms — or something else in the food?”

And if you suspect coeliac disease, don’t start a gluten-free diet before being tested, because removing gluten can affect the accuracy of testing.

Macronutrients & Micronutrients: What Are They and How Much Do We Need?

Every day, your body is carrying out thousands of processes—producing energy, repairing tissue, supporting your immune system, making hormones, maintaining bones and keeping your brain functioning.

To do all of this, it needs nutrients.

They fall broadly into two groups:

🥑 Macronutrients

Needed in larger quantities and provide energy.

• Protein
• Carbohydrates
• Fat
🥦 Micronutrients

Needed in much smaller quantities, but essential for normal body function.

• Vitamins
• Minerals

The interesting part? You don't necessarily need every nutrient at every meal. What matters most is your overall dietary pattern across the day and week.

1. 🍗 Protein — your body's building material

Protein provides amino acids needed to build and repair muscles, skin, organs, enzymes and many other tissues.

For healthy adults, the UK dietary reference value is around 0.75 g of protein per kg of body weight per day.

For example, someone weighing 70 kg would have a reference intake of roughly 53 g per day.

Where can you get it?

🥚 Eggs
🐟 Fish
🍗 Chicken and lean meat
🥛 Milk, yoghurt and cheese
🫘 Beans and lentils
🌱 Tofu, tempeh and other plant proteins
🥜 Nuts and seeds

How often?

Protein-containing foods can be included at each main meal, which can make it easier to meet your daily needs rather than trying to consume most of it at once.

2. 🍚 Carbohydrates — your body's fuel

Carbohydrates are an important source of energy, particularly for the brain and during physical activity.

UK guidance recommends that at least 50% of energy intake comes from carbohydrates, with an emphasis on higher-fibre sources. Free sugars should provide no more than 5% of energy intake on average.

Choose mostly:

🌾 Wholegrains
🥔 Potatoes
🍚 Brown rice
🥣 Oats
🍞 Wholegrain bread
🫘 Beans and pulses
🍎 Fruit and vegetables

The key isn't simply "carbs or no carbs."

It's which carbohydrates, how much, and what comes with them.

You don't need to eat huge amounts in one sitting. Spreading protein across the day can be a simple way to support muscle maintenance and recovery.

🍚 Carbohydrates — regularly, according to your needs

Carbohydrates can be included at most or all meals, depending on your energy needs, activity level and individual health goals.
Focus mainly on high-fibre sources such as oats, wholegrains, beans, lentils, potatoes, vegetables and whole fruit.

You don't need to fear carbohydrates—but quality and portion size matter.

☀️ Vitamin D is a little different

Vitamin D deserves special attention because getting enough from food alone can be difficult, particularly in the UK.

The NHS recommends that adults consider taking a 10 microgram vitamin D supplement daily during autumn and winter.

💧 And don't forget water

Water isn't technically a macro- or micronutrient, but it is essential for life.

The bigger picture

You don't have to ask yourself:

"Did I eat every nutrient today?"

A better question is:

Could the order you eat your food affect your blood sugar?

When it comes to managing blood sugar, most of us think about what we eat — fewer refined carbohydrates, more vegetables, better-quality protein and healthier fats.

But there’s another simple factor worth considering:

When you eat each part of your meal may matter too.

Research suggests the order in which you eat foods can influence the rise in blood glucose after eating.

Try this simple 3-step meal sequence:

🥗 1. Start with vegetables
Eat your fibre-rich vegetables or salad first.

🍗 2. Follow with protein and healthy fats
Then eat foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts or healthy fats.

🍚 3. Finish with carbohydrates
Leave rice, pasta, potatoes, bread or other carbohydrate-rich foods until the end.

Why might this work?

Fibre, protein and fat can help slow digestion and the movement of food through the stomach. This can also slow the absorption of glucose from carbohydrate-containing foods.

The result may be a slower, more gradual rise in blood glucose rather than a rapid post-meal spike.
