Hyperopia, also called hypermetropia or long-sightedness, is when the eye focuses light slightly behind the retina. This often makes close work harder.
In children, small to moderate amounts can be part of normal development. Higher amounts can tire the eyes and may blur distance unless they work extra hard to focus. You might notice short attention at near, slow reading, or headaches after screens.
A comprehensive, consultant-led paediatric consultation can identify this. We include cycloplegic refraction, where safe dilating drops relax focusing so we can measure the true prescription.
Why this matters: the VIP-HIP study (Vision in Preschoolers โ Hyperopia in Preschoolers) linked uncorrected moderate long-sightedness in 4โ5-year-olds with lower early literacy scores. AAPOS guidance recommends comprehensive, cycloplegic eye examinations for children when refractive error is suspected. That is the standard we follow.
If your child finds near work hard, book a consultant-led paediatric consultation in Lytham so we can assess distance and near vision, eye alignment, and the true prescription.
