More people are turning to acupuncture as part of their healthcare — and for good reason. Whether it's managing pain, reducing stress, or supporting overall wellbeing, acupuncture offers a considered, holistic approach to health.
AA membership helps practitioners demonstrate that they meet recognised professional standards. And because AA is a member organisation of the Acupuncture Regulatory Authority, members also gain the benefits of ARA registration — giving patients even greater confidence in the care they receive.

Professional membership is about more than simply joining an organisation.

For many practitioners, it provides:
• A supportive professional community
• Access to continuing professional development
• Ongoing learning opportunities
• Professional representation
• Shared standards and guidance
• A stronger collective voice for the profession

As part of the wider work being carried out through the Acupuncture Regulatory Authority (ARA), the Acupuncture Association supports a collaborative approach to strengthening acupuncture standards and supporting practitioners across the UK.

A stronger profession benefits practitioners, patients, and the future of acupuncture alike.

We are proud to be a member organisation of ARA. Tranparant, Professional, Accountable.

We are proud to be a member organisation of ARA.
Tranparant, Professional, Accountable.

Public trust in acupuncture grows when people can easily see who their practitioner is, what they are trained in, and that they are held to a professional standard.
That is exactly what ARA's public register provides. ARA Registrants - practitioners whose member organisation is part of ARA - are listed publicly as a mark of professional accountability.

• Musculoskeletal support
• Stress and tension management
• Recovery and rehabilitation support
• General wellbeing approaches
• Holistic health management

As public interest in integrated approaches to health continues to grow, professional standards and practitioner education become increasingly important.

The acupuncture profession continues to evolve through ongoing learning, collaboration, and commitment to safe and professional practice.

Did you know there are several different approaches to acupuncture practice?

Some of the most recognised styles include:

• Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture
Based on traditional diagnostic principles and whole-person treatment approaches.

• Five Element Acupuncture
Focuses strongly on balance, constitution, and emotional wellbeing.

• Medical Acupuncture
Mainly practiced by GMP registered practitioners, and uses certain points which have been tested and proved to have certain effects.

• Musculoskeletal Acupuncture (Also called "Dry Needling")
Often used within musculoskeletal and pain-management settings.

• Auricular Acupuncture
Uses specific points on the ear and is commonly used in a variety of supportive care settings.

• Electroacupuncture
Combines acupuncture with gentle electrical stimulation in selected treatments.

Different practitioners may train in different approaches, or combine techniques depending on their professional background and clinical focus.

The diversity within acupuncture is one of the reasons professional training and ongoing standards are so important.

When choosing an acupuncture practitioner, professional standards matter.

Patients deserve confidence that their practitioner is committed to:
• Safe and ethical practice
• Ongoing professional development
• Clear professional standards
• Accountability within the profession
• Continuing education and clinical improvement

As a member organisation of the Acupuncture Regulatory Authority (ARA), the Acupuncture Association supports the development of professional standards designed to strengthen public confidence and support practitioners across the UK.

Strong professional standards help protect the public while supporting the future growth and credibility of acupuncture as a profession.

Acupuncture is often associated with pain relief, but in reality, it is a broad and well-established therapeutic approach used by practitioners across many different settings.

Traditional acupuncture views health as a balance within the body, while modern approaches may have a more contemporary understanding of anatomy, rehabilitation, and wellbeing.

People seek acupuncture support for many different reasons, including musculoskeletal concerns, stress management, tension, recovery support, fertility, acute and chronic health issues, and general wellbeing.

Every practitioner may work slightly differently, which is why professional standards, ongoing training, and regulated practice are so important within the profession.

Acupuncture today is both deeply rooted in tradition and continuously evolving alongside modern healthcare conversations.

Have you ever experienced acupuncture treatment before? If so, what was your experience?

Myth vs Fact

❌ Myth: Acupuncture is painful
✅ Fact: Most people feel little to no discomfort, and many find it deeply relaxing.

Acupuncture is designed to restore balance within the body, not cause pain. You may feel some discomfort when the needles are first inserted, but usually this is because you are not used to the feeling and your brain is alerted to something unusual. After a short while, however, you get used to it, and once the needles are in, there is very little sensation.

A calm, professional approach ensures patients feel safe, supported, and at ease throughout their treatment.
