The thought of attending a stranger for any type of talking therapy is daunting for most. This difficulty is magnified when the person’s mood has deteriorated, their anxiety levels have increased and their self-esteem has taken a battering. Thus the therapeutic relationship is essential for optimum treatment and recovery. As a BABCP Accredited CBT therapist, my role is to help the person become their own therapist. In assisting in the treatment of lowered mood and anxiety, CBT helps establish and build upon coping strategies. We focus on one of the main drivers of mental illness - low self-esteem - in order to drive recovery.
As well 10 years in CAMHS, I have previously practiced in adult mental health services. I specialise in CBT with children, adolescents, as well as adults. My particular interest is in autism. In addition to being an Accredited CBT therapist, I have also completed DBT training and BTTI training for TIC disorders.
CBT - in the majority of occasions - is the first recommended treatment for depression & anxiety (National Institute of Clinical Excellence). Although CBT is a structured therapy, I believe my role to ‘normalize’ treatment and, instead of working for the individual, to work with them. Therapy is a shared approach with the aim being recovery and resilience.
