Meningitis Cases in Reading & Henley

Dear patients.

We are aware of the current reported cases of Meningitis locally in Reading and Henley. The UK Health Security Agency have confirmed that they are actively contacting those who may be at risk due to a close association with the student(s) involved. If you have not been contacted by The UK Health Security Agency, then currently you do not require any treatment.

The number of confirmed cases is very low so there are currently no plans for a local General Practice led emergency meningitis vaccination programme. This means that as a Practice we can currently only provide the Meningitis B vaccine as part of the childhood immunisations programme for babies and young children.

Please be alert to the signs and symptoms of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia. You should seek medical help if you are sick with these symptoms:

• High temperature • Quick breathing
Vomiting (sickness) • Pain in their arms and legs
Headache • Confusion • Stiff neck • Being very sleepy or difficult to wake • Dislike of bright lights • Seizures or fits • Rash • Diarrhoea (soft or liquid poo)

If you are worried about Meningitis then please contact NHS 111 in the first instance. If you are very unwell and need urgent help call 999 for an ambulance.

The Meningitis B vaccine is available privately at some locally pharmacy's - subject to stock availability.
