🏅If you got into the London Marathon, congratulations! It’s such a great day.

For many people, excitement quickly turns into thinking about training, or ‘that’s still a long way off!’

The truth is, marathon preparation doesn’t begin when your training plan starts. It should begin now.

The runners who cope best with marathon training are often those who spend the next few months:
✅ Addressing any niggles
✅ Building strength and tolerance
✅ Improving running mechanics
✅ Developing a solid baseline for when mileage increases.

This is what the Marathon Preparation Assessment has been designed for.

During the assessment:
🏃 Running technique is analysed
💪🏻 Strength and movement is assessed
📋 Any factors that increase injury risk identified
🎯 A personalised plan for you is created

Whether you’re in for London or have entered any other marathon, the hardest part is the training, so be as prepared as you can.

Shin splints are one of the most common running injuries I see.

They often develop when training demand increases faster than the body can adapt.

That might be:
🏃 More mileage
⚡ More intensity
⛰ More hills
📅 More frequency

(There is one gait style reason for shin splints - and it’s not over pronation!)

One thing I think runners often misunderstand is that shin splints aren’t usually just a muscle problem.

They’re often an early warning that the shin bone and surrounding tissues aren’t tolerating current training loads.

The answer is rarely:
❌ Endless stretching
❌ New shoes
❌ Hoping it goes away

Instead, think about:

✅ Training load
✅ Recovery
✅ Lower limb capacity
✅ Gradual progression

Have you ever had shin splints?

Lateral hip pain is one of the more common running problems I see.

Often presenting as pain on the outside of the hip, it’s sometimes aggravated by running, hills, speed work or lying on that side.

One common mistake?

Trying to stretch, foam roll or massage the problem away without addressing the bigger picture.

When managing lateral hip pain, I’m often thinking about:

🏃 training load
💪 hip capacity
📈 progression
🎯 running demands

Because running injuries rarely happen in isolation.

Have you dealt with lateral hip pain while running?

Injuries are frustrating.

But looking back, my own running injuries have taught me lessons that made me a better runner and physio.

✅ Just because pain settles doesn’t mean you’ve recovered. Build tissue capacity to tolerate the high demands you need from it.

✅ More and harder training isn’t better. Absorbing training and recovering is where the fitness gains are. Constantly pushing moves you towards injury.

✅ Easy running should feel easy. This is what helps recovery.

✅ Rehab needs to align with your long term goals. Set short, reachable goals that you can see gets you back to where you want to be. This gives your mind a clear path to recovery.

As runners, it’s easy to become impatient, chase quick fixes or want to push harder when things go well.

I’ve been guilty of that!!

Sometimes, injury doesn’t just teach us how to get back running, it teaches us how to train smarter when we return.

Which lesson resonates with you the most?

Running gait analysis is a great tool to use when assessing runners.

The aim isn’t to find a single ‘perfect’ way to run.

Instead, it can help build a better understanding of:

🏃 movement patterns
📈 loading strategy
🎯 possible contributors to symptoms

But running injuries are rarely explained by gait alone.

Training load, strength, recovery, goals and injury history usually matter too.

Used properly, gait analysis can be a useful part of understanding the bigger picture.

One of the biggest mistakes runners make?

Either ignoring pain completely, or stopping all running immediately.

Often the answer sits somewhere in the middle.

The key question isn’t:
‘Does it hurt?’

It’s:
‘How does the pain behave?’

Zone 2 running gets talked about a lot.

But for many runners, chasing an exact heart rate or pace can make easy running more complicated than it needs to be.

A simple starting point:

Can you comfortably speak in full sentences while running?

If you can, you’re probably in the right ballpark.

Easy pace changes depending on:

- Heat, Humidity & Wind
- Sleep
- Stress
- Terrain
- Fitness & Fatigue

Heart rate zones can be useful tools but don’t forget how running actually feels.

Easy running should feel easy.

How do you run? By pace, heart rate or feel? Let me know in the comments.

Running injuries are rarely just about the painful area.

A running injury assessment looks at:

• Training load
• Strength deficits
• Running mechanics
• Movement patterns
• Recovery capacity
• Return-to-running planning

The goal isn’t just to reduce pain.

It’s to understand WHY the injury developed and help keep you running long term.

Achilles pain rarely comes completely out of nowhere.

In runners, it’s often the result of the tendon gradually becoming overloaded beyond what it currently has the capacity to tolerate.

The goal of rehab isn’t just to calm symptoms down, it’s to improve the tendon’s ability to tolerate running again.

That usually means:
🏃 managing load properly
🏃 improving calf strength
🏃 rebuilding running tolerance progressively

Over a week now since the Chester marathon, so the dust has settled!

Super happy with my time, 3hr17 but lots to learn and to take into account for the next one. One of my most successful training periods, as I got through without injury and felt great on race day.

Another step forward in Project Sub 3 Hours!

Purely heart rate based training was interesting, as it’s something I’ve never done before. I found that training in the summer through the hotter and more humid weather, meant I hadn’t run at the pace I wanted to do the marathon at, often enough.

Big shout to my patient, friend and training partner who ran 3hr16 in his first ever marathon race. Seems like he wasted those years being a boxer instead 👀

Anyone who is struggling with their running training, whether through pain or otherwise, drop me a DM and let’s make a plan to get you to where you want to be.
