đ¤ A little thought about AI and therapyâŚ
Thereâs a lot of conversation at the moment about AI therapy.
And honestly? I can absolutely see why people use it.
Itâs available 24/7.
You can pour your thoughts out without feeling embarrassed.
It can help you organise your thoughts, journal, reflect, learn about coping strategies and even give you things to think about.
There is a place for that.
But full-blown therapy?
Iâm not so sure.
Because therapy isn't just about having someone respond to what you've written.
Itâs about human connection.
Itâs noticing the hesitation before you answer.
The change in your voice.
The things you say and the things you don't say.
The patterns that keep showing up.
And sometimes, it's about someone gently saying:
âI'm not sure I agree with you there.â
OrâŚ
âI wonder if there's another way of looking at this?â
Or evenâŚ
âYou've told me you're okay, but I'm noticing something different.â
And that's where I think the difference lies.
AI can respond to what you give it. A therapist is also working with what they're observing, hearing and experiencing with you in the room.
And let's be honest â we don't always tell ourselves the whole truth either. Sometimes we need someone to lovingly challenge us rather than simply validate what we're already thinking.
Thereâs also something about being accountable to another human being.
Knowing that next week you're going to sit down and tell someone whether you actually did the thing you said you were going to do⌠đ
No offence, AI. đ
I think you can be incredibly useful for certain things. But for me, therapy will always be about relationship, connection, trust, challenge and being truly seen.
And perhaps that's why I love this image so much.
Because sometimes knowing yourself means having someone alongside you who can help you see the parts of yourself that are difficult to see alone. â¤ď¸
What do you think? Would you feel comfortable using AI as your therapist, or would you always want that human connection?
