👩🏻‍⚕️Masking in ADHD….🎭

What even is it?!

Firstly it’s not unique to ADHD. It’s a very human thing that everyone will do without realising to some extent and in certain situations.

Nobody can say they never adapt the behaviour to some degree depending on who they are with or the environment they are in.

But the reason it’s so prevalent in ADHD is because we are more likely to feel the need to adapt our behaviour as a way of coping & fitting in compared to those without ADHD.

For example:

Being told ‘you don’t listen’ since a young age - results in making sure to look like you’re listening even when you aren’t. 👀

Saying the wrong thing or putting your foot in it too many times - results in rehearsing conversations before hand to avoid embarrassment or saying the wrong thing again!

You get the point….

Never assume just because someone presents themselves a certain way, that they aren’t struggling underneath.🫶

I feel we need to recap on the past 200+ years and remind ourselves of how our understanding & recognition of ADHD has evolved over the years📚👩🏻‍⚕️

I mean I’m no scientist but if we have been recognising ADHD symptoms for as far back as the 1700’s (when screens didn’t exist btw 😝) I’m pretty sure by now science would have proved it’s just a myth?!

Or maybe we are all mermaids 🧜‍♀️, unicorns 🦄 & dragons 🐉 🧐

I don’t usually react to things in the media, not because I don’t care or don’t have an opinion. I just don’t like to waste my time and energy on things that I can’t change.

I watched the channel 4 documentary last night ‘The great ADHD myth’ out of curiosity. With an open mind, because some topics I am open to hearing different view points.

But the way this was presented was awful and so damaging to people and their families facing difficulties in their lives due to ADHD. It completely invalidated every single individual with ADHD, children and adults.

The good thing is that today, my news feed is flooded with like minded people, professionals and people with lived experience all coming together to rant, vent and support one & other 🧡🧡🧡

If a clinic is allowing you to book in for an assessment after taking minimal information from you & no process to review that information first……🚩🚩🚩🚩

To me this screams……’we’ll see anyone regardless of whether it’s right for you’ 🧐

That is not how we do things here at The ADHD Nurse✋👩🏻‍⚕️

Although we want to save the world 🌍 & help everyone…..

We aren’t always the best fit & would prefer to signpost you in the right direction in the first place 💜

Referral form is a must before we see you & before you commit financially to a private assessment.

There are often common worries, fears and questions that crop up in appointments such as;

👩🏻‍⚕️What if I don’t actually have ADHD & I’ve made it fit?

👩🏻‍⚕️Worries that they are dominating the appointment (I always remind my clients it’s their appointment not mine!)

👩🏻‍⚕️What if medication doesn’t work for me?

👩🏻‍⚕️Panic when they don’t know the answer to a question!

👩🏻‍⚕️Is this normal to feel like this on medication?

👩🏻‍⚕️What if it stops working?

There’s nothing I love more than chatting things through, helping clients make sense of their thoughts and watching the weight lift by the end of an appointment 💜

The stigma attached to ADHD has shifted so much since I started working in this area 7 years ago.

I don’t think necessarily in the right direction either, it’s just shifted towards different beliefs & misconceptions sadly.

Living with ADHD can be more challenging than you think, without people being dismissive of the diagnosis.

Be curious & open minded 🧡

💡There’s so much misinformation & misconceptions surrounding ADHD.

It’s just making it even more confusing for people who are wondering if they need an assessment or not. 🤨

Not everything you read about ADHD is factual or evidenced based.

Most importantly- not everything about ADHD is applicable to every person with ADHD.

Someone asked me recently “is there anything you don’t like about your job” and this was the first thing that can came into my mind……

Having to tell someone that they don’t have ADHD following an assessment.

It never gets any easier, because you know how they will feel hearing that, no matter how well you try and explain it to them.

But our integrity will always come first and sometimes that means delivering uncomfortable news, but for the right reasons 🫶

Symptoms associated with ADHD can look very similar to lots of other conditions and very easily mistaken as ADHD & visa versa.

We have to look at the whole picture, the reason behind someone’s symptoms before making any assumptions. This takes time, careful consideration & years of experience to spot when it is ADHD & when it isn’t.
