🫀 Lots of people think a heart attack and a cardiac arrest are the same thing, or they don’t know the difference.

🚨 The key thing to remember is that they are both very serious medical emergencies, and you need to call 999 as soon as possible.

❤️‍🩹 A casualty experiencing a heart attack is likely to be conscious, breathing and talking, but will feel very unwell and will need medical help as quickly as possible.

🆘 A casualty who suffers a cardiac arrest will suddenly collapse on the floor and require immediate CPR in order to survive.

👶🏼 As cute as they are, please remember that you must NEVER kiss someone else’s newborn baby.

⚠️ It’s not just about etiquette; it’s about health and safety:

❗️Newborns have developing immune systems, making them highly susceptible to infections. Their little bodies are still learning to fight off germs, which means they’re more at risk for illnesses.

🦠 Even if you feel healthy, you could be carrying viruses or bacteria that could potentially harm the baby. A minor cold for you could be a potentially very serious issue for them.

💋 Did you know that even a simple cold sore could be dangerous for a newborn? Herpes simplex virus can be life-threatening for infants, and it’s easily transmitted through kissing or close contact.

🧼 It’s also important to make sure you’ve thoroughly washed your hands before handling a newborn to make sure you keep them safe.

💖 So, while we all adore babies and want to shower them with love, it’s important to remember to show our affection in ways that keep them safe and healthy.

🥵 With the hot weather, it’s so important to know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially if you’re caring for babies and young children as they can’t regulate their temperature as well as older children and adults.

✅ Knowing what to look for could help you act quickly when it matters most.

👉🏼 Save this post so you have it to hand if you need it, and share it with grandparents, family members, friends and anyone looking after little ones this summer.

A few simple ways to help prevent overheating:

🔸Offer regular feeds and drinks.
🔸Keep children in the shade where possible.
🔸Dress them in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
🔸Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day.
🔸If you think someone has heat stroke, call 999 immediately. It’s a serious medical emergency.

🧠 After a knock to the head, it’s important to keep an eye on your child, even if they seem fine at first.

🏠 It might surprise you to know that around 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK happen at home. That means, if you’re ever called on to give CPR, it’s most likely to be to a loved one.

⛑️ We don’t say this to scare you - we say it to empower you. Learning CPR and first aid as a parent gives you the confidence to act quickly and calmly in an emergency.

🌿 With children spending more time outdoors at this time of year, nettle stings are pretty common, especially on woodland walks, in parks and during outside adventures!

✅ The good news is they’re usually not serious and can often be treated at home.

👉 Here’s what to do:

🧼 Wash the area with soap and water.
✋ Try not to rub or scratch it.
🧊 Apply a cold cloth or wrapped ice pack to soothe the sting.

💊 If needed, a pharmacist may recommend antihistamines or creams to help with itching.

⏳ Nettle stings usually settle within a few hours, although they can sometimes last a little longer.

🚨 Seek urgent medical help if someone develops difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or mouth, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

🍃 And sorry to disappoint anyone who grew up searching for dock leaves… the NHS recommends sticking with simple first aid instead.

❤️ Knowing how to deal with little everyday accidents like this can make outdoor adventures feel much less stressful!
