I had a client come and see me a while back, totally convinced she had a food intolerance.
Bloated. Foggy. Snapping at her kids over nothing. Skin flaring up for no reason she could find. She'd already cut out gluten. Then dairy. Then sugar. Nothing changed.
We got chatting, and I asked her one question that had nothing to do with food at all.
Here's what years of doing this work has taught me: the body doesn't deal with things in neat little boxes. When one system's under pressure, everything else feels it too.
Your gut can't repair itself properly. Your mood dips and everything feels like too much. Your skin stops healing the way it should. Your immune system gets sloppy. Your hormones drift off course. Your focus goes. And you've got nothing left in the tank for the people you love most.
Most of us try to fix each bit on its own. New diet. New moisturiser. New way to "manage stress." New apology to the other half you snapped at for nothing.
But so often, in my experience, they're all coming from the very same place.
Sleep. 😴
I know, I know - not the most exciting answer. Everyone tells you to get more of it, but nobody really tells you why it matters quite this much.
Funny thing is, I know this one from the inside. I struggled to sleep for years as a teenager, and back then nobody - least of all me - ever joined the dots between that and how rubbish I felt in my body, my skin, my moods. If only I knew then what I know now.
I'm running a webinar on exactly this next week - why sleep affects so much more than we give it credit for, and what actually helps. Link to register in comments 💤
