NEONATAL AND CRITICAL CARE EXTERNSHIPS – 2027 - CLOSING DATE 30TH AUGUST 2026

We are excited to announce that we are opening applications again for our neonatal and critical care externship program in 2027. You will live and work at the hospital for a month as a member of the referrals team (accommodation provided free of charge). The successful applicant will benefit by gaining experience and skills in the care of sick neonatal foals and post-partum mares, as well as close involvement in the diagnostic work-up and management of a variety of critical patients within our Intensive Care Unit. You will also participate in out-of-hours patient care and assist with emergency admissions. Opportunities may also be available to assist with ambulatory stud medicine work.
This position is suited to a hard-working, motivated individual who wishes to pursue a future internship or residency opportunity, a career in stud medicine or who wishes to increase their equine practical skills within the support of a hospital setting.
Due to the large number of applications received for 2026, we will be running two 4-week placements in 2027.
The dates are as follows:
29th March to 25th April 2027
10th May to 6th June 2027

Whilst most of our patients are indeed quite large animals, occasionally our team are fortunate enough to be able to examine and treat some other and slightly more unusual species 🦛

Rainbows Diagnostic Imaging specialist Jonathon Dixon (JD to many!) was recently asked to attend Flamingo Land Resort to support their excellent in-house veterinary team, a service we are pleased to provide to surrounding practices and wildlife centres. This visit was to examine several patients, one of which included performing an ultrasound of the abdomen on Aurora the hippopotamus! Many of you may remember Aurora, who spent a short amount of time with us at the hospital shortly after her birth, whilst she was a little unwell! We're so pleased to report she is doing fantastic, and she's definitely grown quite a lot!

Safe to say this was a fun day out of the office for JD and head nurse Becky and we just had to share some images with you all!

If you ever need to call us out to your horse, we know it can feel stressful. You don’t need to have everything perfect, but a few simple details can really help us help you faster.

If you can, try to have:
* Heart rate – even a rough idea is useful
* Temperature – if you’re able to take it safely
* Droppings – are they normal, reduced, or none at all?
* A quick video – often tells us more than words ever could
* Timing – when did it start, and has it changed since?

Don’t worry if you can’t get all of this, just tell us what you can. We’ll guide you through the rest.

Some noise during work can be normal, but it’s worth investigating if you notice:

* A wheeze, whistle, or high-pitched noise that happens consistently in exercise.
* Gurgling or “rattly” breathing.
* Noisy breathing that is getting worse over time.
* Reduced performance alongside the noise.
* Any new or increased effort to breathe.

These signs can be linked to airway inflammation or conditions such as Equine Asthma, or other upper airway issues.

If you’re unsure, try filming your horse during exercise and share it with your vet, it can really help with assessment.

Early checks are always better than waiting for symptoms to progress.

Dry, hard going can increase concussion on limbs and lead to soreness, bruising and strain injuries, especially in horses in regular work.

Top tips:
* Avoid fast work/jumping on very hard surfaces.
* Stick to even, well maintained ground.
* Reduce workload intensity if needed.
* Watch for shortness of stride or stiffness.
* Check hooves for sensitivity.

If your horse feels “off” on hard ground, it’s worth getting them checked early, small changes can make a big difference.

Post-Competition Horse Check: What to Monitor

After competition, a quick check can help catch early signs of strain or fatigue.

Respiratory recovery – Breathing should return to normal fairly quickly after work. Persistent fast or laboured breathing may indicate overheating or stress.

Digital pulses – These should be faint at rest. Strong or bounding pulses can be an early sign of foot inflammation.

Appetite – Your horse should be keen to eat and drink. Reduced interest may suggest discomfort or dehydration.

Hydration – Check gums and overall energy. Tacky gums or dullness can indicate dehydration.

Soundness – Watch for stiffness, unevenness, or new lameness once cooled.

If anything persists or worsens, contact your vet early, small changes can matter.
