Your hair can sometimes give you clues about what’s going on internally 👀

Changes like increased shedding, slower growth, weaker regrowth, breakage or changes in texture can sometimes be linked to nutritional factors, but they can also have plenty of other causes.

If I'm looking at nutrition and hair health, I wouldn't jump straight to supplements. I'd want to understand the bigger picture, including diet, lifestyle and, where appropriate, relevant blood tests.

Your hair is worth investigating, not guessing at ☁️

Just cleaning up in here 🫧 5 hair myths I hear all the time as a trichologist 👀

“Your hair needs to breathe.” Your hair follicles get oxygen and nutrients from your blood supply, wearing a hat isn’t suffocating your hair.

A cold rinse makes your hair grow faster.” It might feel refreshing, but it isn’t going to change your hair growth cycle.

“Expensive hair products work better.” I’ll never stop banging this drum, price doesn’t automatically mean better ingredients or better results.

“More shedding means you’re going bald.” Shedding and hair loss aren’t necessarily the same thing. Changes in your normal shedding pattern are what matter.

“Flakes mean your scalp is dry.” Not always. Flaking can have several causes, including oily scalp conditions.

Frizz doesn’t always mean your hair needs more oil 👀

When the hair fibre is lacking moisture, it can look drier, rougher and more prone to frizz. Instead of reaching straight for a heavy oil, a lightweight hydrating serum could be a better option.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it helps attract and retain moisture. Try applying a small amount through damp mid-lengths and ends.

If your hair is fine, start small, you can always add more, but you can’t take it back once you’ve overdone it 😅

How often should you actually be washing your hair? 👀

There’s no magic number of wash days that works for everyone. Your scalp is still producing oil, sweat and shedding skin cells between washes, and products like dry shampoo, oils and styling products can add to that build-up.

For some people, going too long between washes can leave the scalp feeling greasy, itchy, flaky or uncomfortable.

The goal isn’t to wash as little as possible, it’s to wash when your scalp needs it ☁️

Healthy hair is usually built through small habits, not big changes ☁️

These are a few things I prioritise every week: washing my scalp when it needs it, always using heat protection, keeping my hairbrush clean, avoiding tight hairstyles where I can, and looking after the basics like sleep and nutrition.

None of these are complicated, but over time they all help support healthier hair and a healthier scalp.

Consistency will always beat a quick fix 👀

Shhhh it’s always listening 👀

You can’t magically speed up the rate your hair follicles grow hair, but you can support the environment your hair is growing in.

Rather than looking for products promising “rapid hair growth”, I’d focus on a good scalp routine and ingredients that can support scalp health, such as caffeine, peptides or niacinamide, depending on the formulation.

If you’re noticing increased shedding or thinning, don’t just reach for a growth serum and hope for the best. The most important thing is understanding why it’s happening in the first place.

Support the scalp, but investigate the cause ☁️
