We often think of trauma as something big, obvious or life changing, but the experiences that shape us aren’t always easy to recognise.

Sometimes. it’s the repeated feeling of not being good enough. Having to put everyone else first. Not feeling heard or learning early on that it’s safer to keep your feelings to yourself.

Over time, these experiences can influence how we see ourselves, how we relate to others and how we respond to the pressures of everyday life.

You don’t have to compare your experiences with someone else’s to acknowledge their impact.

Trauma-informed therapy isn’t about labelling everything as trauma. It’s about understanding your experiences, recognising the patterns that may have developed and finding a way forward that feels right for you.

At Think Hive Health we believe you deserve the support before you reach breaking point.

“Nobody warned me that perimenopause could affect how I feel about myself.” 💛

It’s not just hot flushes—it's sudden self-doubt, mood swings, and feeling completely disconnected. So, why does this happen?

The truth is that fluctuations in key hormones directly impact brain chemistry and emotional regulation. But here is the most important reminder: You are not losing yourself; you are navigating a major physiological transition.

Let's break the silence and talk more about what’s really going on behind the scenes! ✨

đź’ˇWhy Perimenopause Impacts Your Confidence, Anxiety, and Sese of self.

Ever feel like sudden anxiety or brain fog came out of nowhere? Estrogen directly interacts with your brain's neurotransmitters, meaning unpredictable hormonal shifts can make familiar tasks feel overwhelming.

We often hear about physical symptoms like hot flushes during perimenopause, but the emotional shifts are just as significant.

When hormone levels fluctuate, it directly affects the chemical messengers in our brain responsible for mood and stress regulation. This can lead to unexplained anxiety, sudden dips in confidence, and a feeling that your identity is shifting.

When estrogen levels fluctuate unpredictably, it can trigger sudden, unprompted feelings of anxiety or panic.

Brain fog, word-finding difficulty, and physical fatigue can make familiar tasks feel overwhelming. Many women start second-guessing their abilities at work or in social settings due to these cognitive shifts.

Changes in body, mood, and stress tolerance can leave you feeling like a "different person.

Realising this is a physiological transition not a personal failure is essential for processing these changes.

Evidence-based strategies: Tools like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) help reframe unhelpful thoughts and manage bodily anxiety.

Understanding the link between your hormones and your mental health takes away the self-blame. You aren't 'losing your edge', your nervous system is adapting to a major transition.

💡 Reminder: It’s a physiological transition, not a personal failure.

ADHD: Why assessment is only the beginning

The UK Government’s independent review into mental health, ADHD and autism highlights an important challenge: demand for ADHD assessments has grown far faster than services can keep up, leaving many people waiting for answers and support.

🔹 Recognition matters. Many people, including adults, have spent years struggling without understanding why. An accurate ADHD assessment can help people make sense of their experiences and identify the right support.

🔹 Diagnosis is not the finish line. Access to appropriate treatment and ongoing support can remain difficult, even after a diagnosis. People should not be left to navigate these challenges alone.

🔹 ADHD can co-occur with autism, anxiety, depression and other difficulties. It is essential to look beyond a single diagnosis and understand the whole person, their strengths and their individual needs.

đź’ˇ So, what needs to change?

We need to move beyond a system focused solely on assessment and diagnosis towards one that also prioritises meaningful, ongoing support.

At our service, we believe that assessment should be the starting point, not the end of the journey. By combining comprehensive assessments with tailored, evidence-based interventions, we can help people better understand their ADHD, develop practical strategies and make meaningful progress in everyday life.

Because identifying a need is important — but helping people thrive is what really matters.

You don't have to have a breakdown to know that something isn't right.

Mental health struggles can be much quieter than we expect.

Sometimes, they look like being the person who is still getting everything done.
Going to work. Looking after the kids. Replying to messages. Making plans. Showing up for everyone else. But underneath it, you might be constantly exhausted, more irritable than usual, overthinking everything, struggling to switch off, withdrawing from things you normally enjoy, finding everyday decisions overwhelming, putting everyone else’s needs before your own, an telling yourself “I just need to get through this week”.

None of these things necessarily mean you have a mental health condition. But they can be signs that something needs your attention.

And you don't have to wait until you're at breaking point to do something about it. Therapy isn't only for when everything has fallen apart. Sometimes it's about understanding what's happening, making sense of patterns you've been stuck in and finding ways to manage life that feel more sustainable.

With World Mental Health Day this, we want to encourage everyone to look inward. Perhaps the question isn't “Am I struggling enough to need help?”. Perhaps it's simply: “How am I actually doing?”.

If the answer makes you pause, that might be worth exploring.

Is it just mum brain… or could there be more to it?

We all have days where we forget why we walked into a room, lose our train of thought or read the same sentence three times.

And motherhood can make that feel *very* normal.

But if you’ve been experiencing difficulties with focus, organisation, time management, forgetfulness, overwhelm or getting started with everyday tasks — and you’ve wondered whether ADHD could be part of the picture — it may be worth exploring.

Especially if you can look back and recognise similar patterns from before becoming a mum.

An ADHD assessment isn’t about putting a label on normal mum-life.

It’s about understanding the bigger picture, including your experiences across different stages of life, and exploring whether ADHD could help explain some of the difficulties you’ve been experiencing.

At Think Hive Health, we offer ADHD assessments for women and aim to make the process thorough, supportive and genuinely useful.

Wondering if ADHD could be part of your story?

Visit our website to find out more about our ADHD assessments and book a no-obligation discovery call.

Hi, I’m Rachel 👋

I’m a Mum of 2, a CBT & EMDR therapist and Co-founder of Think Hive Health.

My journey into therapy began in 2012 after completing my MSc in Psychology and starting my career in the NHS. I spent almost 10 years there developing my clinical experience before moving into private practice.

I’ve always believed therapy can be about more than getting through a crisis. It can help us understand ourselves. Make sense of what we’ve been through and create a little more balance in our live lives.

Becoming a mum changed the way I saw my work.

When I had my son in 2020, I experienced first-hand some of the realities I had seen so many women describe. The mental load, guilt, exhaustion, identity shifts and pressure to somehow remain yourself through it all. Keeping everything going whilst being pulled impossibly in multiple directions all at once.

It made me realise just how much women can carry without anyone seeing it.

That experience became a part of why I developed Think Hive Health with my friend and colleague Ramsha.

I continue to work with trauma, anxiety, low mood, self-esteem and many other mental health difficulties while also having a particular passion for women’s mental health. I’ve undertaken further training in women’s mental health including menopause and hormone well-being because our emotional health is influenced by so much more than what happens inside our heads.

And while motherhood is very much my current lived experience, my passion extends across the female lifespan - from early adulthood and fertility through motherhood, perimenopause and midlife.

Outside of being a therapist, I’m just Rachel. I love being a mum, I enjoy exercise, holidays, good food and drink, seeing friends and spending time with the people I love.

I don’t have life completely figured out, and like my clients, I’m working my way through this rollercoaster too. I want my clients to experience a safe space with another human being who understands that life can be complicated.

My hope is that the women I work with feel seen, understood and able to put down some of the things they’ve been carrying.

You don’t have to carry it alone.

Rachel x

Here is your gentle reminder: You don't have to wait until you're falling apart to ask for support.

Being an expert functioner is exhausting.

Therapy isn't just an emergency response for when things break down completely. It is also a proactive , safe space for women who:

âś…Look like they have it all together on the outside.
âś…Keep going, working, and caring for others every single day.
âś…But are quitely carrying a heavy mental load and feeling drained underneath.
