Regaining control over tremors is one of the most common FND symptoms we work with and can have a huge impact on daily life. Aggressive tremors substantially impact walking ability and safety, so helping clients to regain control and limit this symptom is a priority. We see different varieties of tremors and they can affect the whole body.

You can see the work Leanne is putting in - this isn’t easy, it takes time, practice and a skilled practitioner who understands the condition deeply. Luke has been working to understand specific patterns that lead to or influence the aggressive tremor response is then working out strategies to help Leanne start to regain the control.

Leanne’s posture and breathing can also impact how the tremor presents, so Luke is coaching her on how to change her breathing pattern and to keep upright which reduces some of the tremor severity. You can see within just a few reps of practice Leanne is starting to shift her control (what’s even more impressive is she is able to make jokes WHILE doing all this work!)

Fiona visits APEX roughly every 3-6 months for ā€˜top-ups’ to work on any changes in her Motor Neurone symptoms, then returns to Ireland to keep up the hard work!

She had been noticing some fine motor skills were harder, so Fiona and Laura use some of her week’s intensive programme to work on improving her finger and thumb control, gripping movements, opening and closing the fingers and not using the wrist to ā€˜cheat’ the movement.

Multiple Sclerosis ā€œtraining for lifeā€ - a key part of our approach!

Teaching our clients how to train most effectively, no matter how much gym experience they’ve had, is one of the foundations of our rehab method. After significantly improving Pauline’s muscle responses and control, Erin takes her into the gym to teach her the methods and exercises to continue the work at home. As we’ve said many times before, we don’t want clients to rely on us! The hard work continues at home to rebuild and maintain muscle which links to daily strength and ability.

Transverse Myelitis - walking unaided

Kasthuri reached out to us from Canada after feeling frustrated by lack of progressive approaches near to her and seeing our results she decided to make a trip to the UK to work with APEX NEURO.

ā€œ I had an incredible experience at Apex Neuro, and I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to work with Rob. Rob is truly an expert in his field. Working with him helped me understand my body on a much deeper level and, more importantly, what I need to focus on to continue improving. In just 11 days, I’ve already seen progress in my foot drop and walking gait, which is something I’m really proud of—but I also understand there’s more work ahead. The difference now is that I actually know what to work on, thanks to Rob’s guidance.

What really stood out to me is that Rob isn’t just knowledgeable—he’s also one of the funniest and most honest people I’ve met. His openness and the way he views life gave me a completely new perspective. It was honestly eye-opening, and it’s a gift I don’t even think he realizes he gave me while working on my gait.Another thing I really appreciate is the continued support. Having access to remote sessions gives me so much peace of mind, knowing I can send videos, ask questions, and stay on track with my progress.

The environment at Apex Neuro is also amazing. Everyone there is so welcoming, supportive, and knowledgeable. They take the time to explain body mechanics in a way that actually makes sense—why your body is moving a certain way and how to retrain it properly. This place is truly exceptional at what they do, and I’m so thankful for everything I’ve learned and experienced here.ā€

How long has it been since you’ve stood like this? 4 years

After years of progressive decline, Lorraine spends 95% of the time seated or in a wheelchair. One of the main goals was to help Lorraine stand - not only did they achieve this but she stood for 20x longer than she has in 4 years!

At first, they start with Luke’s support - holding both hands while Lorraine learns to engage the muscles correctly again. With practice, they are able to shift from the weaker side to the stronger side - this is important with Multiple Sclerosis as very often one side is impacted more than the other and clients learn to bias the side with better communication. They are then able to establish a more even weight distribution which helps Lorraine stay stable and avoid hyperextending.

Normally, Lorraine can stand for around 15 seconds to transfer or while holding onto something so it is an amazing achievement to stand for over 5 minutes!

Breaking through spasticity in Multiple Sclerosis: one of the most common symptoms we work with is spasticity due to MS - Laura is working out the specific places that are preventing Jane from gaining full range of motion. What we often find is when the spasticity is reduced, there is so much more strength, range and control that was ā€˜hidden’ or restricted by spasticity before.

Regaining control in the hamstrings with Multiple Sclerosis - why is this such a big achievement? Hamstring are vital in walking and using stairs. Very often in MS the hamstrings become affected and with the disease progression it becomes harder to curl the hamstring which makes it harder to bend the knee when walking and extend the hip.

At first, Beth isn’t able to curl her hamstring (her lower back and torso want to help) but (at first) with help from the electrical stimulation and coaching from Erin she is not just able to curl the hamstring with full range of motion, she can control the lift and lower, and even fight against resistance from Erin. This is all within the space of a single session, despite the general belief that you cannot improve function after decline has taken place due to Multiple Sclerosis.

Erin then tests Beth without electric - this is all her, voluntarily contracting and controlling the muscle. At first it’s difficult but with practice she is able to replicate what they had achieved with the e-stim. This will make a huge difference in her walking.

Ashley describes how she usually manages on walking with her daughter on the way to school, but starts to find it challenging on the way back, especially as fatigue starts to kick in. So Rob and Ashley get out into the ā€˜real world’ walking the full length of the school run there and back, ā€œmaking it real lifeā€ - we want to ā€˜stress-test’ while she is here to build the confidence to do this back home in Chicago!
