People love to ask why adult children leave.
Almost nobody asks what had to happen for leaving to become the safest option.
Because children do not naturally move away from the people they are wired to love.
They move toward them.
Again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
They explain.
They forgive.
They minimise.
They hope.
They come back believing maybe this time will be different.
Long before there is distance, there are usually years of trying not to need it.
That is the part people never witness.
They only see the boundary.
They never see the thousands of moments that built it.
The conversations that changed nothing.
The apologies that never came.
The fear of bringing something up because it would somehow become your fault.
The way your body started bracing before you even walked through the door.
By the time someone chooses distance, they are rarely running away from love.
They are running toward something they have not felt for a very long time.
Peace.
And that is what so many people misunderstand about estrangement.
It is not choosing to lose a parent.
It is choosing to stop losing yourself.
If a relationship repeatedly asks you to sacrifice your nervous system, your reality, your self-respect, your body, your peace, your ability to trust yourself…
distance is not what broke the relationship.
Distance is what finally exposed how broken it already was.
That is why the conversation should never begin with,
“How could a child do that to a parent?”
It should begin with,
“What happened inside that relationship that made peace feel impossible while they stayed?”
Because that answer tells you everything.
